257912 2004-08-03 10:51:00 Awhile back there used to be free SMS text messaging via the Net, but no longer, I believe.

Is there a pay service available for sending text messages to cellphones via the Internet? I would really like to hear from someone who uses such a service, mainly since I need to be assured that credit card info is going to a legitimate company.

Also, would such a service work for both Vodafone and Telecom? I think the free text messaging (via ICQ and another place??) only worked for Vodafone.

Thanks --- Steve

257913 2004-08-03 12:51:00 I won't even get into the Vodafone vs Telecom debate *yawn*.

If you're a Vodafone customer you can text using a web interface on their site, billed to your phone account as normal.

Thanks Whisky. This is OK for me, but I have a friend who does not have a cellphone (and will not get one - very short of cash and has a habit of breaking tech items or getting them pinched) but who has internet connection. Her friends have cellphones so she would like to keep in contact with them. Her Telecom account was terminated since she did not pay the $330 bill racked up with cell phone calls. Yes, she is not responsible when it comes to these things. My thought is that she could use the Net... but not sure if then her friends could actually repy to her using text messaging (recieving text on the Net)??
