258435 2004-08-05 09:49:00 I saw in the Herald today an ad for Orcon broadband offering Telecomless jetstream.

New! Orcon Flat Rate Residential ADSL (from October 2004)
256k download, 128k upload, no data caps or limits, static IP address, no Telecom JetStream fees, service provided solely by Orcon, No setup fees, free friendly helpdesk, multiple payment options

Sounds almost too good to be true :) They have an information site (which I haven't checked out yet) here.

Might be worth looking into. I'm still on dial-up, so it might be time for me to take the step-up.

Mike.

258436 2004-08-05 10:01:00 But wait there is more.

They can not provide this service yet because telecom hasnt unbundled the local loop.

258437 2004-08-05 11:23:00 Sept/Oct they say. The advert's on the back page of latest PC World too.... $20 cheaper than what I'm paying now p/m, unlimited and not through Telecom (yay).

Is this why the Jetstream Games realm is "going"... cause we won't connect thru Telecom anymore?

258438 2004-08-05 12:40:00 I was getting Jetstream from Orcon for a while. The performance was terrible, erratic with very high latency. Never did fix it.
Pity because their service & help desk is very good. Moved to Slingshot, the performance was good, but the customer relations/help was terrible.

Now with Xtra, performance good, help desk good, no complaints.

258439 2004-08-05 13:04:00 I have been with Orcon a while now and found that they took problems seriously - even phoning on my mobile a few days after to see if things were ok. Lately my gaming latency has been shocking, and Telecom 'suggested' that it was Orcon's problem. I signed up with Xtra to check and it is no different. I have cancelled my Xtra account now, and will stay with Orcon, and see what the next few months bring.

258440 2004-08-05 21:45:00 Mzee.. I have been on Orcon ever since I went to Jetstream. No problems at all. If you are having problems with eratic service I suggest you talk to Telecom as currently they provide the service and you just validate access to Jetstream thru Orcon with your login... paulw (1826)
258441 2004-08-06 10:24:00 hi there.

BUt i have one Q.
Where it has "no Telecom fees"
And its listed at $50 a mnth.
does this mean that thats the TOTAL fee you'll pay, no line fees etc

Thanks

258442 2004-08-06 10:52:00 It appears so. You have to have a phone line first though, so thats $30 odd bucks to Telecom, but $49.95 is all for your internet. Jester (13)
258443 2004-08-06 11:04:00 Yes , thats correct you will not get a bill from Telecom, only Orcon.
I do not think it has anything to do with unbundling of the local loop, it must be part of Telecoms promise to the govt to wholesale jetstream
at a good price to ISP's in exchange for not forcing them to unbundle the loop.
However $50 a month is no better than Xtra's Jetsurf plan.
