258379 2004-08-05 06:44:00 In a Forum today on Aardvark, discussion ranged on oldie programmers, technology, education etc.. Someone said " I was in a dairy not long ago during a short power outage. Anyway, the kid, 15 years old, said to me as I stood at the counter, oh, the powers out. "I cant use the till" and looked for the calculator in the drawer under the counter. I had to help her ad up $1.50 and $1.75. Struth. So much for 5th form education. Technology makes you brain dead."
Can your kids do arithmetic ???
Cheers Tony

258380 2004-08-05 07:04:00 i'm doing 7th form calculus (its a *****, never do it, avoid it at all costs), and i can't do mental arithmetic to save myself. I used to back at primary school, but ever since i've got to use a calculator i've become lazy and let the calculator do it for me ;). Its even worse now that i've got a graphics calculator... it does everything for you, and if it can't then you can just make a program to do it!

258381 2004-08-05 07:12:00 Your were looking for intelligence behind the counter in a dairy. metla (154)

258383 2004-08-05 07:24:00 :^O Metla.

Well what's worse, the kid having to add it up on the calculator, or being overcharged because he can't do the maths properly in his head.

258385 2004-08-05 09:35:00 True indeed Laura (43)
258386 2004-08-05 15:10:00 And in many cases better degrees. Since user pays here students are not failed so that the tert prov can get the next lot of fees! true! Im a tutor. Very frustrating to fail a student and have him (its always him) bumped up to carry on. Students leave believing they are tertiary achievers then hit the real world. Where will our poor country end up? kiwikid (5908)
258387 2004-08-05 15:23:00 Well if you look long term then the education of our kids will mean nothing .

For to long we have focused on things that don't enhance life but clutter it instead, a $5000 chair is no more comfortable then a 500 dollar chair, You just need to earn more to pay for it .

All a man needs is food, shelter and a place to sleep .

Oh yeah, and a woman to cook the food, keep the shelter tidy and change the sheets .

lmao .
