258228 2004-08-04 14:20:00 Is this a really stupid question?
Where should I look for a technowizard to come to my house (L Hutt) to check out my computer? Are there magazines where they advertise? Ive looked in the local papers. zilch
Im very unhappy with my new computer which is MUCH slower than my old pentium 2 which I replaced because it had slowed up! I bought extra RAM and HD and thought together with HTT I would be able to open pages/files immediately but no! still takes ages and often hangs. Whenever I do a performance monitor etc - No problems reported other than hangs.

I would like someone to check out my system to make sure it has been put together correctly:
Using OS: MSWinXP Home Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600

with: Philips 107E5 (GS4) Monitor on RADEON 9200 series (128MG RAM) 1280x1024 60hz
display driver seems to be a version 1.0.0 Vivid17 icm but I cant find a monitor driver.
I know spyware and viruses can slow it up but have Zone Alarm,Spybot, WinPatrol running/scanning frequently.
Any help appreciated

258229 2004-08-04 14:48:00 Ok just a few questions...

1) What exactly are you unhappy about as far as your PC is concerned?

2) Is it slow all the time or only when you do certain things with it... eg surf the internet.

3) What kind of internet connection do you have.

4) Is the PC still under warranty or did you build it yourself.

If it's still under warranty then have the vendor take a look at it.
If you built it yourself then I would just format the hard drive and re-install everything, you'll be surprised how helpful (even if drastic) that is.

5) Are you using the latest drivers for you mobo, system slow downs can occur due to out dated chipset drivers?

These are just a few suggestions...

cheers

258230 2004-08-04 17:13:00 Thanks Chiefnz

2) Is it slow all the time or only when you do certain things with it... eg surf the internet.
All the time -just opening applications/files/ Word pages/documents etc.and frequently hangs. But Ive only the standard programs/ applications loaded as supplied apart from security services.:-(
Ive wondered if too many processes were running but when I C/alt/del theres only the one. Ive checked services (78) and active tasks (25ish) and wondered if this is the norm? Could I disable some? but which? As a sole, non networked user could I disable all the networking tasks? ?:

3) What kind of internet connection do you have.
Its a dialup and $#^&*%# slow but Im used to that.:8}

4) Is the PC still under warranty or did you build it yourself.
No its still under warranty, but I dont really trust the vendors. :0
I paid for the "Power Series" and note I have the "Family Series" 2 grades lower.x-(
I plan to return it but would like an expert to check out what else is wrong first. I reckon its like car mechanics...see a woman coming... No, truly, Im only paranoid after 3am. Its just the voice of experience.]:)

5) Are you using the latest drivers for you mobo, system slow downs can occur due to out dated chipset drivers?
No, I have wondered about that. My network adapter driver has a red cross but when I try the update wizard the only choice is the cd (If I load from the CD Id be no further ahead?) or a set path and I dont know what to put in that. See why I need a techno wizard?
Sorry for this tome, but as a newbie Im making haste slowly, or trying to.:D

cheers

258231 2004-08-04 18:50:00 check the alt/ctrl/del task manager box under the performance or processes tabs and take a look to see if anything is hogging the cpu.....i recently built a new pc for a guy and it had an amd 2000xp+ but was ridiculously slow even tho it only had win98 installed.........turned out that somehow and I really dont know why but 'works calendar reminder' program which was listed in the startup apps had got itself into a loop and was using up 98% cpu time lol...........weird but true......anyway I simply killed it off from starting up and the thing flew as it should ! perhaps you have a similar prob ? drcspy (146)

Alrighty then based on what you've said above regarding the Power Series... my advice to you now is TAKE THE PC BACK.

If you paid for the Power series then thats exactly what they should have given you. If you still have the receipt or invoice take that along with you as proof.. especially if it says "Power Series" on it.

Also get the specs of the Power Series and the Family Series... make sure you do indeed have the Family Series... if you do I would say that under the consumer garentees act they are obliged under law to give you the system you paid for.

I don't think you should let anyone touch the machine or try and fix it... clearly if what you say is true then you have been ripped off.

I would also like to add that if you didn't or don't trust the vendor why did you buy the PC from them... just a question? Why don't you trust them?

cheers

258233 2004-08-04 22:06:00 That PC should fly faster than your old one who did you buy it from ? take it back if it is freezing up one of my mates is very good with PCs in Wainui if you are really desperate it may need reformating kiwibeat (304)
258234 2004-08-04 22:15:00 I note that you do not mention any dedicated Anti-virus software. Spybot and Spypatrol do not cover virus and worms.

Before taking it back, try an online scan (housecall.antivirus.com) so as to eliminate the possibility.

There are free antivirus program out there...
AVG (free.grisoft.com)
AVAST (www.avast.com)
Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/)

For novice users, I would probably recommend AVG.

258236 2004-08-04 22:32:00 Run an anti-virus to ensure there are none resident on the machine.

Then take the damn thing back, don't waste your time or money shagging around with it.

258237 2004-08-04 23:31:00 Was it fast when it was straight out of the box, or has it been slow right from the very start? Rob99 (151)
