258120 2004-08-04 08:29:00 As the subject says, my brothers new 9600xt (Gecube Platinum Edition) is not playing well with his system.

Problems:
1.Most of the time (99%) The bios screen does not show, and nothing would show until windows gets to the Login screen.
2. Some times his games will not play, e.g Vice city complaining that there is not enough Video Ram.

System Specs:
MB: Asus A7v8x-x
CPU: Amd Athlon xp 2200+
Mem: 512 ddr
Hdd : 80gb seagate
Os: Windows Xp Home Sp1 / Soon to be Gentoo linux as well.

I have run out of ideas, and if I dont fix it, we will have to take it back and get a nvidia, as my brother before has a Geforce 4 Mx440

Thx,
ILikeLinux

258126 2004-08-04 09:45:00 Just a thought. If you are planning on installing Gentoo on this computer you would be better off buying a nVidia card. The support for ATi cards isn't all that good at the moment.

Quite funny really as when nVidia had the better cards they didn't offer any linux support and ATi did. Now the roles and drivers are reversed :D

I know all about that, i Have an Ati in mine......

Btw: Ati is going to propperly support linux very soon.

258128 2004-08-04 11:52:00 Thanks for the tip :)

I just checked out there site and they have 2.4 kernel drivers for the 8500 to 9800 series. Not much help for you at the moment though as they are RPM based as well. Although they say they are working on 2.6 kernel drivers and are hoping to have some other distros offer their specific format drivers.

Cheers!

258129 2004-08-04 12:31:00 Can you get into the BIOS screen at all by pressing DEL.

Have you checked for a BIOS update for your mobo.

Just a few random things that may help.
Have you got the latest chipset drivers installed for your mobo.

I would try another graphics card and see if you get the same problem.

cheers
