| 258090 | 2004-08-04 12:14:00 | Hey guys... Some d*ck put xp on my cousins computer.... its a 500mhz with 120mb ram... Since theres replacements for most stuff she uses, I figured i'd put linux on it! One problem tho. She uses some stupid hewlett packard gallery and a psc 1300.... Also she uses microsoft business planner, micorsoft publisher and nero. I haven't looked/linux install is buggered, so is there replacements for these? And which distro should I install... SuSE 9.0 or Fedora... actually, I might try lycoris - any known problems? Cheers |

If you google for PSC 1300 you'll see the first URL is Linuxprinting.org and it says that yes it'll work fine. ...Working backwards we next have Nero. Use K3b - Its a Nero clone and looks a hell of a lot nicer! Publisher? You have a few options: Crossover Office - A paid-for product that lets you run Windows apps on Linux (Namely MS Office and Adobe products) OpenOffice.org ...And there's some Kde-based software too (Ive left my laptop at work tonight so I cant check sorry) MS Business Planner? Dunno what that is but there's most likely alternatives she can use :-) Hewlett Packard Gallery? Sounds like gphoto2..... Anyways, if you need the .iso for Xandros OCE - Lemme know and I'll put it up online. Either that or there are (slower) .torrent downloads around. I could post it to you if you dont have the bandwidth. Hope this helps Chill. |

| 258093 | 2004-08-05 02:42:00 | If you've got the one outa the PCA Mag then you have the Standard Edition. The OCE is the standard edition except it uses Opera as its browser (With Ads) and the inbuild CD Burning capabilities are limited to the minimum speed your burner can do. Give her the Standard Edition from the PCA mag if you've got it, and have a look around PressF1 for a link Jen C provided on how to install K3b in Xandros :-) Chill. |

| 258097 | 2004-08-05 03:53:00 | Ive not tried it myself but apparently K3b is fine with most copy protection. There's always dd to make ISO's, or dd-rescue is an error-tollerant version. Linux doesnt need any extra software to mount CD Images - You can use a command from the command line to do it. Its not as easy as point-and-click but its a lot faster ;-) |
