258168 2004-08-04 11:55:00 My desktop computer has XP Pro, my laptop has Win 2000, both are wireless networked with D-Link. Both computers have Zone Alarm Free Version installed.
My problem is that the laptop cannot connect to the internet through the desktop unless Zone alarm is turned off on the main desktop computer.
I have entered both IP addresses into Zone Alarm on both computers
but the problem remains.
Does anyone have any ideas I could try to overcome this problem please.
Thanks, Peterver

258169 2004-08-04 12:23:00 I shall watch this with interest - I have the same issue with a hard-wired home LAN and PC#2 can only get onto the internet if I disable ZA Pro on both PC's (even after assigning unique IP addresses and adding to the "trusted zone"). andrew93 (249)
258170 2004-08-04 12:46:00 you will need to explain how they are ment to access the net. eg is the net being shared from one pc with ICS or proxy or are both being pluged into a router. tweak'e (174)
258171 2004-08-04 17:45:00 Have similar prob with dhcp network (win 2k), zone alarm in dhcp server with broad band usb. configured not to restrict access from L.A.N." BUT" it makes the "server" invisible to the linux clients, and prevents their net access. some times it still interferes with ie on ie start up (in 2k sys) causing "PGE NOT D" error. This is the remnant of an expired "PRO" trial I wonder if this is part of the problem. At the moment I turn it off make the connection and turn it on again, primitive, works. I would also like a cure for this. drb1 (4492)
258172 2004-08-04 18:45:00 entering the ip may not be enuf did you enable server rights ? drcspy (146)
258173 2004-08-04 21:08:00 The desktop connects to the internet via Jetstream and this connection is shared with the laptop (If the desktop loses it's connection, then so does the laptop). Cheers, Peterver peterver (3888)
258174 2004-08-04 21:11:00 Atten drcspy, not sure what you mean by server rights, can you elaborate please. peterver (3888)

going by what liitle is said i would guess that you are useing ICS. zone alarm free dosn't support ICS, you really need to buy the pro ver. however the old trick was to drop the internet zone sicurity setting down to medium in ZA. this will make it your pc unstelthy but if you have external adsl modem thats nit realy a big problem.

258176 2004-08-05 00:09:00 go into program control in zone and make sure that whatever you are using to share the connection has server rights enabled or it'll be restricted..... drcspy (146)
258177 2004-08-05 20:35:00 Attention andrew 93: I posed the question re Zone Alarm preventing access to internet by networked lap top on www.itsecurity.com and this is the reply I received.

www.wrdclogsys.com I don't believe that ZoneAlarm (certainly the free version) supports this mode of operation. The best solution is to use a router rather than a USB ADSL "modem" which I assume you have. This would allow both machines access to the Internet without needing each other. Such a router would have a firewall hardware which should be supplemented by ZoneAlarm or a similar personal firewall on each PC.

If that is not an option, you will need to look for an alternative personal firewall, however it is likely that you will have to purchase a paid for version to get this function. Kerio for example will only work on a gateway PC if you are using the full version. In all honesty, the money would be better spent on a low end router.
Thanks to everyone for their input, I think I will go the router way. Peterver
