258611 2004-08-05 20:39:00 My wife's got this Toshiba Satellite laptop, 1.8GHz Celeron, 256 RAM, XP Pro.

On the desktop there is this big square grey area that is staying there no matter what she does - with all kinds of backgrounds the grey square stays. If I knew how to copy the screen and post it, I would have posted this. I think - reading from previous posts - that it's got something to do with the screen?

Thanks

258613 2004-08-05 21:46:00 No you can't drag it - and it's about 2.5 cm square. I'm trying to upload the image to show this thing to you guys

When you open a program is the square still visible when the window covers it?

I have come across a similar problem with an e-mail client "Incredimail", has this ever been installed? Or has anything elese been recently installed?

258616 2004-08-05 22:10:00 Looks like "Sticky notes" Putting notes on screen, rather than the paper one's. Daft idea I always thought - me, bits of paper everywhere.

258617 2004-08-05 22:16:00 No - any other window (like this one) - it's gone. It's only on the desktop it seems - and in startup, before all the icons load, the image loads first and then the square is not showing. It only appears after the whole setup/icons/etc has loaded

She tried to install Incredimail some time ago but it was unsuccessful, so I uninstalled it

Recent installs : last one Spybot 1.3. No actual big installations - loaded Paint Shop Pro about 6 months ago. WinXP updates - but then the square appeared about say 4 weeks ago, without any funny installs. No malware or spyware or virii

258618 2004-08-05 22:25:00 I would try a reg scanner, maybe some files/fragments have been left behind, file types still listed?#? after the uninstall of Incredimail.
I use jv16 to scan.
