Basically correct, though it will never be *quite* as secure I suspect as a NAT configured system. I am not suggesting that a NAT system needs no firewall, as it can be useful to check outgoing traffic. Having said that mine gets bored with nothing to do.

Also there is compelling evidence that external ethernet connected routers do perform better in marginal signal areas when compared to PCI/USB. As far as I know USB and PCI are much the same, except USB has the extra overhead of USB support. Both use the host CPU far more than an ethernet connected unit does.

Its also a lot more convenient to network an ADSL connection from an ethernet router than to have to use ICS to do it under windows.

There are some $ savings in using PCI, but in my view not worth the small savings long term.

258785 2004-08-08 05:09:00 Thanks to everybody who has contributed to this thread.

In summary, am I correct with the following:

1. If I opt for a self-install, and use filters (assuming they work), then I can plug my ADSL modem into any jack in the house?

2. If the filter option turns out to be unsatisfactory, I can have a splitter installed at a later date, but that would then limit me to a specific jack? (Not that this would really be an issue, as I have a dedicated office which is fairly close to the telephone line entry point anyway).

3. An ADSL modem/router will allow me to network my PC's and allow access from multiple PC's at the same time.

Cheers

258786 2004-08-08 05:24:00 1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes

If your office phone jack is the first in from the entry point, you can fit a single filter to the circuit that supplies the jackpoints in the rest of the house?

Thats what I have done, works fine. One $20 filter covers 3 phones.

258787 2004-08-08 05:26:00 Hear hear GF .

If your USB or PCI ADSL modem works, great . If you have problems, after checking lines/signal look suspiceously at such devices . They are to DSL what software modems are to dialup, they *work ok* mostly but can be a bugger to unravell if there are problems or your in the habit of fiddleing .

Nope, I sure didn't metla! :D You need to read the posts more thoroughly . meh!

However, I did make a bit of a snafu in one post: :8}

"Step 3: Use a filter because they are cheap, and they ensure that you can isolate your ADSL line from everything else in the house . With very little work you can wire your splitter as a filter anyway . "

Should have read:

"With very little work you can wire your filter as a splitter anyway . "

Sorry if I caused any confusion there . :8}

As for:

>DSE is to computers what edmonds cooking book is to a cheif .

Well metla, probably 99% of meals consumed in New Zealand are not cooked by chefs (and that includes fast foods and other "short order cook" meals not prepared at home . Generations of families have enjoyed recipes from the Edmonds cook book, and you may be surprised to know that it is New Zealand's best selling book of all time with over 3 million copies sold .

It all started in the South Island of New Zealand, in the late 19th century, when Thomas Edmonds developed his own baking powder in response to the dissatisfaction of customers with the quality and variety available at the time . His Edmonds "Sure-to-Rise" Baking Powder was a great success, and the Edmonds cook book was first published early in the 20th century (1907) . That makes it 97 years old, and early editions are collectors items .

Relevance?

DSE supplies technology at a consumer level and therefore they meet the needs of experts at the same level as the Edmonds Cook Book meets the needs of professional chefs . Neither would claim to target professionals, who will go elsewhere for their products and advice, but the average consumer is satisfied with DSE products and services .

DSE stores would not survive if the majority of their customers were not satisifed, and their warranty/return policies are far better than many so-called professional parts suppliers, who have either never heard of the Consumer Guarantees Act, or deliberately choose to ignore it, witness the recent post about a 15 month old Seagate HDD that has been sent back to the importer . The customer has been fobbed off and denied their rights under law . A replacement or refund should have been supplied at the point of sale .

I wouldn't comment on the standard of advice offered at DSE, but you are dealing with sales staff, not technical experts, so caveat emptor .

258789 2004-08-09 03:28:00 Hate to break it to ya Billy T but everything you said after the smiley face was the most irrelevant tosh I’ve read since you copied and pasted the other fluff from the dse site. metla (154)
258790 2004-08-09 04:39:00 Hate to break it to ya metla, but there wasn't a smiley face in sight!

It was an "embarrassed blush" not a smile. :(

[b][pre]Just remember that PF1 is a help site, so not
everything is written for experts. Don't allow your own
acknowledged expertise to blind you to the needs of
others with lesser experience. That was the purpose
of the DSE quote, and my jetstream input to this thread.

258791 2004-08-09 05:02:00 ah ha,notice how i dragged 2 more posts out of you after you stated the earlier post was your last word?

anyhow,i have all images killed off so all the icons show up as a blank box .

And just between you, me, and the fence post . . . . I’m pretty sure this forum exists so I have somewhere to annoy people when I should be working .

That's about the most accurate thing you've ever said. But it's no revelation; I mean just state the obvious next time :^O
