258825 2004-08-06 09:18:00 Hi all,
I am using Mandrake 10 Official on my laptop and I'm a bit of a linux noob, I know basic commands (which is how I came here) but I have a problem I have no idea to solve.

I was having problems with my OpenGL screensaver where it would crash the X Server into an endless loop until I pressed the power button (even the terminal didn't work properly) so I thought I should get new drivers for it. I downloaded the Intel drivers for my graphics card and was able to install them. I then rebooted (because it said so) and changed the driver settings. Then restarting I would only get the terminal.

I have a feeling I need to reset my configuration. I did a bit of looking on the net and came across -configure, which made it work again but alas the login manager didn't load up and I was completely lost as to what to do.

I have tried renaming the configuration files (I am assuming the .old file was what it was before I changed the settings) but whenever I type rename XFreewhatever XFreewhatever.backup it doesn't.

Any help will be greatly appreciated - until then though I guess I'll have to live with Windows again.

258826 2004-08-06 09:56:00 try reconfiguring it through "xf86config" Megaman (344)
258827 2004-08-06 12:03:00 Thanks for that suggestion. I ran that and discovered I needed to know a lot about my computer, so I went into Windows to print off the file (Explore2FS lets you access Linux partitions in Windows - a driver is also available to do this in Windows from that site too). I then noticed the comment at the top of the file "File generated by XFdrake". So, I booted back into Linux, typed XFdrake and lo'n'behold it makes it easy to change.

So there you have it. If you suddenly find that you are at a terminal than a nice graphical prompt when starting Mandrake, login as root and run XFdrake to see if XFree is working.

That one took me all evening to work out too.
