259336 2004-08-08 02:35:00 I have received the following question from a lady in SeniorNet. I feel I should advise her to uninstall and reinstall Ad-aware, but I think that this pop-up is unrelated to Ad-aware. What is this pop-up she receives all about, and should she select the CANCEL box?
What advice should I give?

"Recently you advised us to install ADAWARE, which I have now done.
My problem is that since that time, every time that I turn on my computer, I get this box/screen coming up which says,
WELCOME TO PRECISION TIME UNINSTALL
It has a green backed picture of a computer on the left and it is an official looking box which I have seen on other occasions. It gives me the option of "ticking" AUTOMATIC (to which it defaults), CUSTOM or REPAIR. Down below are the NEXT and CANCEL buttons.
Should I go ahead and uninstall ?"

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Hopeless.

259339 2004-08-08 03:15:00 Thanks very much Johnboy.

All has been revealed. The second site is a great reference site for the Gator curse.

I shall try to explain all this to her as clearly as I can.

Thanks again,

259340 2004-08-08 03:15:00 also make sure thay have got rid of gator/claira as it will just redownload and install it.

did they update adaware and do a FULL scan ?? (i suspect they only did the smart scan and there are leftovers).

also a firewall will stop gatoe etc from downloading in the background.

259341 2004-08-08 03:27:00 Grateful thanks tweak'e .

Excuse the dumb question but how does one get rid of gator/claira?

Your full scan and firewall suggestions are noted .

I shall now be able to do a paper on Gator for our SeniorNet, so your contributions will help others as well .

God bless .

259342 2004-08-08 03:32:00 adaware or spybot should get rid of it. gator (now called claria) is quite an old outfit. with adaware you really need to do a custom scan and make sure all harddrives are selected.

however sometime the spyware removal programs miss the orginall installer which is often hiding in windows temp file. make sure you clean out any temp folders. a firewall will give you the location of the nasty when it tries to access the net in case its hidden esle where.
