259271 2004-08-07 23:12:00 I want to upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP Pro -- can I do this without having to start from scratch and losing all my programs and data?

Is there a special version of XP Pro I have to buy?

Yep there is a way, you can upgrade to Win XP, that means You just load win xp pro over the top of win 2000

But I & I would think every one here does suggest that you do a clean install of win XP & Not an over the top of win 2000 install

Then you will have a less change of having problems latter on

Also I do Recommend! That you back up Everything! Up Before you do the upgrade, just in case something goes wrong

It is best to be safe then sorry :)

Win 2K -- > XP Installs in my experience are virtually seamless, boot up Windows, chuck the XP Install CD in and let it do it's thing.

I upgraded my machine from W2K to XP in December of 2001 and have used that install right up until I formatted my machine about 2 months ago, never missed a beat. All others I've upgraded from 2K to XP have been faultless.

Nein. I upgraded using a corporate full version site licence disc, nothing special required.

259276 2004-08-08 09:20:00 You might want to wait a month or two before buying Win XP Pro, until the new Service Pack 2 is included with it. Otherwise you will have the hassle of downloading and upgrading the updates or getting them off CDs when they are available. It would be much easier to just purchase Win XP with the SP2 already loaded. Susan B (19)
259277 2004-08-08 09:42:00 thats hardly an upgrade... I recommend reinstalling win2000 so you don't get propagandarized... willie_M (5608)
