259259 2004-08-07 21:27:00 I have XP on 2 disks, Master (C) and slave (D). I want to replace my Master Drive. How can I force the system to boot from my Slave drive. I have tried changing the bios, but I'm missing something, I have got a boot.ini on D, but there must be some other files needed.

I have 2 bootable Hds and edited the boot.ini to read as follows:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

When booting, the pc will ask which drive you want to boot. Either can be made the default.

Does this help, or have I misunderstood your problem?

259261 2004-08-07 21:59:00 have you tried setting your current slave as the master?
I'm probably wrong, but i have always thought that it's only the boot files on the C: drive that are read.

259262 2004-08-07 22:12:00 Not quite what I was after. I can use either version of XP. What I want to do is copy my C Drive to a removable media. Remove the orginal drive, install a new bigger drive, and copy everything back. In the meantime I want to be able to have the computer boot from the slave.

259263 2004-08-07 22:14:00 Have thogut of that, but then all the drive letters will be wrong, eg my D drive will become C, actually, if I boot from D removing C I guess the same thing will happen. Might need ot give it some more thought, before I rip the whole thing apart.

259264 2004-08-08 03:29:00 Anyway, it's usually best to install Windows. There are all sorts of things which can catch you if you don't.:_|

Linux is a different matter ... ;-)

259265 2004-08-08 03:54:00 Try pressing F8 during the boot, you should be then prompted which drive you wish to boot from Rob99 (151)

You can change all that.

If you use XP, Start --> Run -- compmgmt.mscn

Look under Disk Management, under Storage.

259268 2004-08-08 05:40:00 Thanks, I think the best way to procced is to;
1. remove my slave drive.
2. put the new drive in it's place, as a slave.
3. format and partition it.
4. copy everything on the master drive to the new drive.
5. change the jumpers on the new drive to make it the Master drive.
6. exchange it for the original master drive.
7. put my original slave drive back

cross fingers and everything should work.
