259813 2004-08-09 02:40:00 Often if there is a HDD drive error or a file is corrupted or if there is just something plain wrong, the first symptom I get is that my mouse pointer gets progressively uncontrollable. What actually is the cause of the pointer behaving so erratically? If I don't close down immediately it starts to behave erratically then gets so bad I can't even get it to rest on "Start" to close down. willbry (1555)
259814 2004-08-09 02:51:00 You mean it moves of its own accord?

I would suggest an immediate scan with anti-virus software,as well spybot and adawere.

And another mouse.

259815 2004-08-09 02:57:00 I get the impression that therse things are happening often enough for you to see a pattern. :-(

It shouldn't be like that.

Even with Windows. ;-)

I suspect you have a fundamental hardware problem which is causing all the others. The mouse misbehaviour is the common symptom. It might be a marginal area of memory, which happens to corrupt the mouse position information, then goes on to cause disk errors, etc.

Get a memory test programme and run it. Memtest86 seems to have a good reputation, and it's free. There will be a link for a download somewhere here.

You don't need the mouse to shut down. Hit the "Windows"
key once, the "up arrow" key once, and "Enter" twice. If you can't find the "Windows" key, use Ctrl/Esc instead. :D

Thanks Graham for advice re Memtest 86 also for the tip re- closure using the keyboard.
I find that after closure, reboot and using scandisk [ which tends to find and fix errors on the disk] , the problem is solved until next time which could be hours, days or a week away. I think perhaps I have some buggy software
