259896 2004-08-09 13:00:00 Hi , I am another who believes there is no such thing as enough RAM. I wouldn't be quite as tempted as usual in your case, as the system specs indicate an upgrade is not an unlikely scenario, and RAM that suits this set-up is unlikely to suit the new machine.
Photo and image processing generally are almost as bad as games for hardware hunger, but - if it ain't broke, don't fix it too much.

259898 2004-08-10 06:10:00 drcspy has a point - the older these technologies get, the more expensive the stay.

For example:

SDRAM 256MB (~133MHz): $82
DDR 256MB (~400MHz): $70

SDRAM 512MB (~133): $152
DDR 512MB (~400): $135

Yes, except Mrs Misty is an impediment in that dept !! ;) ;)

I'd hate to see you at an auction (on second thoughts it might be interesting !) -- 512 MG ?? ]:)
I will look at msconfig again though. I have once before but I am a bit too conservative on these things. Like to nail down that QuickTime (read about it in NZ PC World - just keeps coming back). ;\

Will definitely buy more RAM - the words of wisdom from you all have utterly convinced me.

Many thanks
Misty :)

259903 2004-08-15 09:55:00 I am wondering if I actually have more RAM than I thought I had. When I start the PC, the data that you get when it is booting up says that cache = 256 Mg. Is that different ?

Also Belarc Advisor says that I have four slots, two each of which have 64 Mgs , the other two empty. However also it says that there is 112 Mgs of "Installed Memory". I did think that was the summary of the slots (less some for running the soundcard ?) - but am now wondering if that is additional and that I do already have 256 Mgs ?

259904 2004-08-15 10:00:00 Ignoring what the BIOS said, if the advisor told you that you have 112MB, he probably means that you have 128MB less other uses such as integrated graphics.

If they cache the BIOS is referring to is the Processor's cache, then that's a different matter all together.

259905 2004-08-15 10:10:00 Thanks Growly - as I feared ! Will go out and buy more. No worse off than I thought in the first place.
