259732 2004-08-08 22:58:00 My pc started to show messages that registry system file had an error and it has restored recent backup and told to restart. After restarted it was all the same again. So I reformatted HDD, reinstalled Win and for some time it was ok. Then started again. My guess is that CDrom has a slight damage like a scratch.
My PC is 9 years old, Pent S with 48Mb RAM. I have XP, but would it take it? To by a new WIN98 will cost more then my PC. Is it hopless, or there is a way arround?
Thanks for ideas.

259734 2004-08-08 23:15:00 Hi Metla! Perhaps you are right. Thanks. Have another HDD and will try it.
By the way, METLA in Russian means a "broom". Do you know that?

259737 2004-08-09 04:41:00 Hi Metla! Installed another HDD. Trying to boot up with boot floppy. Bios recognise new HDD. Set Bios to boot sequence A,C with CD-ROM support. Formatted the HDD with "Format C: /s" command. Then at prompt A:\> have to type a command. Typed "setup" and tried WiN98, would not accept.
Any ideas?

259738 2004-08-09 04:58:00 When you boot up with the floppy in, did you note the letter it gave to the CD? It is usually the last thing before you get the A prompt. If not, a restart will do it, as long as you choose the "with CDROM support" option.

Then at the prompt go

?:
setup

(where ? = the CDROM letter) and you have the Win98 disk in the CDROM.

259740 2004-08-09 06:36:00 Can you actually see scratches on the install CD? Make sure you don't have smudge marks all over the CD. I wouldn't of thought a scratched/smudged CD would of led to the OS carking it some time down the track ...
