260369 2004-08-11 03:56:00 Gidday Folks!

I am tossing up the idea of switching from my 56k Dial-Up Connection to Telecoms 1Gb Jetstream Deal this month seeing they have a promo on.

Apologise if this topic has been covered recently...please re-direct if so!

Anyway, I would like to purchase an ADSL Router as I have a number of PC's to connect at once!

My question is that there seems to be such a GREAT difference in the prices between routers that I would hate to buy a relatively cheap one to find out i should have forked out the extra bucks.

Telecom sells the Alcatel Speedtouch 510 router [$250 ish] with their ADSL Router Starter back which all up costs around the $350 mark [inc 2 x filters and CAT5 cables etc]

However DSE are selling one of their Routers - XH1169 for $159......!?

Could anyone please enlighten me on anything to do with this topic, before i go out and purchase the DSE Special! Or get lumbered with Telecom when i could have gone somewhere else!?

PS. My home phone line is with Telecom...which makes it slightly cheaper also.

Cheers
Darcy.

Ill refrain from having an opinion on DSE.

If you want one worth owning then get one with built in switch and firewall, there is other features as well that are worth looking at,one lets all comps on the network conect to games servers, the term for it escapes me at the moment.

And you get what you pay for applies in this case, unless you buy the telecom bundle, then you just get pack raped by the cash whores.

260371 2004-08-11 04:07:00 Where about do you live? Wired Country offer a wireless solution in Counties Manukau area, Hamilton and anyone who can see the sky tower in auckland. This service whoops the pants off jetstream etc.

Wired Country (http://www.wiredcountry.co.nz/)

The best ISP for the is probably Ihug, one of the benefits of wired country is that it can do voice aswell allowing you to totally remove yourself from telecom evil grasp.

One of the better plans offers phone and 1mbit internet for $99 a month. With a 10gb international limit and unlimited national.

Ihug (www.ihug.co.nz)

If you have to go with Jetstream the DSE router is perfectly fine some of the die hard DSL junkies may say you need something better, but for home use with just a couple of PC's its fine.

I quite like D-Link products, i myself use a D-Link DSL500 with a 8-port 10/100 switch.

260372 2004-08-11 04:14:00 There have been a few threads over recent months re routers/ firewalls - likes and dislikes etc - have you tried putting "router" into the search box at the top of the page ?
I have one of these and have found it great

260374 2004-08-11 04:16:00 ...of course my router is useless if you need / desire wireless anything ... KatiMike (242)
260375 2004-08-11 04:30:00 Yes, you have to look out for all the Wired Country Representatives surfing the forums. They take any chance they can get to promote their service, when clearly the person in question is not even remotely close to any Wired Country service. :p There's no question it is superior to Jetstream but everybody everywhere feels the need to rant about it.

Is Telstra cable available at your place in Christchurch?

260376 2004-08-11 04:36:00 Thanks for all the comments Guy's.

I'm in Christchurch, out at Burnham / Rolleston.

So I 'm pretty sure Cable and Wireless is out for me.

We only just got ADSL out here recently actually....

Heard Paradise have a pretty competetive High speed Plan??

Cheers

260377 2004-08-11 09:13:00 If you look on the outside back cover of this months PC World, there is a deal by Orcon that cannot be bettered at the moment, 256Kbps, no cap, all fees paid to Orcon for $49.95 per month, if you join any existing Orcon Jetstream plan before the launch of their new flat rate broadband service. Else the price will be $59.95 per month if you sign up after the launch date.

Their current plans are still $10.05 cheaper than Paradise though.

I have just had an email reply from Paradise which says they are supposed to be bringing out new plans at the end of the month which will be competitive.
I will wait and see!
