260355 2004-08-11 00:41:00 Daddy, how did you and mummy make me?

You are much too young to need to know that sort of stuff son .

But Dad, my friends at school all know how they were made!

Oh, all right then, you'll need to find out one day anyway
so it might as well be now!

Your mum and I got together in a chat room on MSN . I set up a date
via email with your mum and we met at a cyber cafe . We found that
our communication protocols were compatible and decided to set up
an informal message exchange to test the viability of a
permanent connection .

Once we found that our data exchange was reliable, we established
a direct link, and then your mother downloaded from my memory stick .
However, immediately after my upload had finished, we discovered
that neither of us had used a firewall or implemented any other type
of security system .

By that time it was far too late to hit the delete button, and none of
our AV signatures would work on a delayed action virus . So, nine
months later the blessed virus appeared and became resident within
our system .

That's my story son, and I'm sticking to it .

Cheers

260360 2004-08-11 05:20:00 Be aware, those viruses can remain resident for years, severely disrupting your system, obtaining funds from your bank accounts, and wreaking havoc if you attempt to remove them. There are an infinite number of variants, all of which behave differently, and most of which spawn mutations of themselves over time. The only option is to sit out the infection, as they will eventually become bored with your system and remove themselves...

260361 2004-08-12 01:58:00 Many years ago I built a speech synthesiser which ran on my Z80 computer. From time to time when I was frustrated by misbehaving computers at work I would set the synthesiser up to repeat "...ing computers" at one second intervals.

Like the lady journalist in "The Truth" by Terry Pratchett I found this very solacing in stressful moments. But at one point she said, "I wonder what '...ing' means".
