260225 2004-08-10 09:01:00 do we need a faq for sp2??

I assume that we will have lots of postings about it starting soon.

who wants to write it??

covering stuff like:

where do i get it?
why do i need it?
will it do damage to my computer?
how do i install it?
help it broke my program!!
will i need a new cat after i install it?

i know that some of this will be covered in the pcworld next month when they put out the CD but i think that the questions will roll in anyhow.

Possibly

I believe so too.

I would suggest Chilling_Silence or Metla.

Clilling_Silence knows where to get it and has put it on computers in the past.

> why do i need it?
Good question.

> will it do damage to my computer?
It will not break any hardware.

> how do i install it?
Use Win update and let things install as they feel like. Or you can wait for the PCWorld cover disk. For me I just want to be in charge of my PCs.

> help it broke my program!!
You should not have been running this particular program or use the compatability wizard or properties for a shortcut or dual boot into what ran the program in the first place or get more computers or dont install SP2.

> will i need a new cat after i install it?
Only if it pissed in your computer and you therefore broke its' neck. :-)

Or you ask for help on this forum and neglect to mention cat pee on the motherboard maybe.

I am very much inclined to agree.

I will do it; since I have it installed & tested it & I can show you guys I can do thing when I went to do it.

Yep, so when I do write this FAQ, I will include bits from the PC world mag in the FAQ

260229 2004-08-10 10:46:00 "After installing SP2, my Peer-to-Peer filesharing programs do not download files as quick as before and I experience constant network timeouts"

SP2 has introduced a new the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts .

This new feature is one of the security features designed to proactively reduce the future threat from attacks like the blaster and Sasser worms that typically spread by opening connections to random addresses . In fact, if this feature had already been deployed, Sasser would have taken much longer to spread .

It's not likely to help stop the spread of spam unless spammers are
trying to reach open email relays in the same way, by opening
connections on smtp ports of random IP addresses .

This new feature should not interfere with normal system operation or performance of normal, legitimate applications, but does slow the spread of viral code . New connection attempts over the limit for half-open connections get queued and worked off at a certain (limited rate) .

SP2 by default enforces a limit of 10 Concurrent TCP Connections, however many filesharing programs require many more than this to operate effectively .

There is a patch available here ( . lvllord . de/4226fix/4226fix . htm" target="_blank">www . lvllord . de), that will change the default 10 connection limit to 50 . This should give filesharing programs enough TCP connections to work correctly while still enforcing a limit and providing the security that Microsoft intended .

260231 2004-08-10 11:10:00 SP2 plays havoc with Zone Alarm too - after I installed SP2 Mozilla couldn't access the 'net, 9/10 web pages wouldn't load, and eventually I figured SP2 firewall & ZA were incompatible so I tried to uninstall ZA when Windows Firewall popped up with "do you want to continue blocking truevector?" I answered "unblock" and everything has been sweet since. andrew93 (249)

260233 2004-08-10 21:40:00 I downloaded the network install of SP2 last night. And installed it this morning.

No probs at all. I just disabled the firewall/antivirus option in XP (so copying files between the PC's would still work). I noticed when it was still on my networked PC's disappeared. Turned it off, they were back again.

And continued using Nortons Internet Security / and it's av work fine. So, far so good.

Didn't notice any diff in speed in copying the network install file to the networked PC. No slowdown whatsoever
