260193 2004-08-10 07:57:00 A confession. I use XP Pro. I select which updates I want from Microsoft. So I sort of assumed I was getting SP1 and 2 is small doses? No?

Whats it all about please?

260194 2004-08-10 08:05:00 You've been getting the security Hotfixes.

SP2 introduces the Security Center (Monitoring of Firewall, Antivirus and Windows Update status), as well as a better firewall, better IE and Outlook Express security amongst other things.

You've been patching against the security holes basically, but not getting the great new features!

Ok, I will try & explain what SP is all about

First as you may or may Not know SP = Service Pack

The reason why Microsoft issues Service Pack's is to update a programs or OS (operating system) to fix Security issues & some times add new features to the all ready existing OS&/or programs

The above is just a nutshell expiation on what Service Pack are.

If you what a more in-depth expiation, Post back here & I will happy give one.

260196 2004-08-10 08:36:00 Whats it all about Alfie.
That was Michael Caine I think.

Anyway Chill and Stu - is it a bit like Windows 98 being replaced by the new OS, 98SE (Special Edition)? Except we don't have to buy it?

And do you recommend installing SP1 & 2, or just 2?

Cheers
Winston (Alfie to his mates)

260198 2004-08-11 00:16:00 I dont think sp2 will install unless sp1 is already.
So far I have sp2 installed on three pcs in a work enviroment with no problems, yet (still testing though on a Novell network, running network delivered apps as well as local installed apps). Sp2 seems stable so far

yeath, in a way, its sort like that :)

Like beama said, Iam also not too sure if SP2 needs SP1 installed (as I had Sp1 installed then I installed SP2), but you could all way try it with out SP1 & see if it works ( make sure you backup every thing just in case)

No need to install SP1 if you're about to get SP2 - the service packs are supersets; that is, SP2 contains all the updates provided by SP1.

That pretty much sums it up. People buying Win XP from now on (or fairly soon, anyway) would get the SP2 included, just as I have got SP1 on my Win XP CD. When Win 98SE came out I never had the option to upgrade my Win 98 to SE, unlike people who have plain old Win XP and can update theirs to SP1 and now SP2.

Microsoft are getting pretty generous in their old age, don't you think? ;-) ]:)
