260092 2004-08-10 03:19:00 I have ZoneAlarm (free version, current - 5.1.011) installed on a network of 4 win XP pc's. Three of the 4 are working fine, but one has all of its DNS requests to the router blocked by ZA. This includes requests by programs that are cleared for internet access, as well as requests by ZA itself!

It's definitely ZoneAlarm, because I can shut it down and access is no problem. All the instances of ZoneAlarm are configured the same - the pc's are in eachothers' trusted zone, so file sharing works fine, and all the others have access to internet via switch/router.

None of them have the router IP specifically in their trusted zone - is this neccessary/safe??

Thanks, S

260094 2004-08-10 04:47:00 Thanks John,

Couldn't find what I needed there, but it got me to a ZA forum where I found this thread (forum.zonelabs.org).
Seems like the same problem (although why only 1 of our 4 pc's I don't know).

The fix involves putting the DNS server (ie- my router) in the trusted zone, and allowing Generic Host Process to have server rights within the trusted zone. I'm just a little concerned that this may be a security risk...

I'd really appreciate if anyone could shed some more authoritative light on this...

Very good link. I just got rid of Norton Internet Security 2003 and Norton Antivirus Professional 2003 and instead installed Zone Alarm Security Suite. Acts as a firewall and Antivirus both.

Note.... This is not the free version....

I had no problems configuring and using it so far and I have a network with only two PC's. I got rid of Nortons as I was having a problem with the Live Update being able to download updates for the Common Client but the install failed. Being that I was going to buy the 2004 version of Norton Antivirus anyway as my subscription was going to expire in about 3 weeks and given the recent Live Update problems I decided to go buy Zone Alarm.

My point in posting this is to thank you for the link you gave. I have not had any problems with the new software so far but I know where to go if I do.
