260026 2004-08-09 22:36:00 We have two PCs , both running WinXP Home. On one, when I shut down, the PC automatically powers off. On the other, I get the "It is now safe to turn off..." screen. I'd like them both to behave the same way, but I can't find the setting that controls this.

Any ideas?

It is Now Safe to Turn Off Your Computer" error message when you try to shut down your computer

260028 2004-08-10 00:48:00 hmmm . . . interesting .

Thanks for the info Johnboy - it didn't occur to me to check the KB,- I usually find that unless you already know the answer, it is impossible to properly phrase the question!

It turns out the PC is not ACPI compliant, so I went through the work-around, and now I don't get the message, but the PC reboots instead of powering off!

This is not a big enough deal to spend any more time on, so I think my wife is going to have to just keep pressing that button .

260029 2004-08-10 00:56:00 Have you got the "Automatically restart" box ticked? Found...

Right-click "My Computer" and choose properties
Advanced tab
Settings button (under the heading startup and recovery"

This stops the PC restarting if it gets a BSOD (BluScreenOfDeath) which means by utilizing the code on the BSOD, it is more likely to pin down the cause of the problem.

260032 2004-08-10 02:01:00 Thanks Tommy - I saw this link from the other thread that is going at the same time (funny coincidence, eh?), which describes the issue but doesn't proivide a fix in my case.

260033 2004-08-10 02:14:00 Yes, it would be a problem if it was your computer, Tony. It would have to be fixed then. ;-) Graham L (2)

260035 2004-08-10 04:58:00 Ooooh that hurt, Graham!

Actually my wife doesn't care a bit - it is my anal retentive nature that wanted to have things nice and tidy - but only up to a point! ;\
