259966 2004-08-09 20:42:00 ive got a toshiba satellite pro 4300 laptop running windows 98 SE with updates and i just recently installed a pcmcia network card (no name brand) based on the realtek chipset.

i installed the device with no problems, however when i assign an ip address to the device it wont use it.

ipconfig says something like

0 ethernet adapter
ip address : 0.0.0.0
subnet mask : 0.0.0.0

even though i assigned an address.

winipcfg is the same.

i tried the other slot with the same problem and the diganostic programs on the driver disk wont recognise the network card so they wont work.

i have not tried the latest drivers from realtek but will try later this evening.

there are no device conflicts

259967 2004-08-09 20:55:00 Does windows 98 have ipconfig... i thought that was an NT 2K XP thing....
I know winipcfg is a 9x thing....
when you type winipcfg... it shows you both the dial-up adapter and the erthernet adapter... but the dial-up first...
when the dial up when not connected it shows 0.0.0.0 & 0.0.0.0
have you changed it to show the erthernet adapter...?
A simply thing... but if so... sorry...

259969 2004-08-09 22:24:00 network cards are the screwiest things when they dont work properly... and then one day when you least expect it, it randomly starts working. Jimmy D (2061)
259970 2004-08-10 01:44:00 You shouild be able to set the IP address in the Control Panel/Network page.

Click on the "TCP/IP for Realtek ..." entry and then select the DNS tab. (I think ;-))

259972 2004-08-11 00:39:00 Does the hardware Manager show the adapter there, with no yellow exclamation marks?

I think that you have to have DHCP disabled to be able to enter a fixed IP address, so that's probably not a cause of the problem. I supect there's a hardware detection/conflict which means that the driver isn't active.

If it's the Realtek 8139 from DSE, I've got one and it works with W98 (no problems at all) , though it does have problems with Linux because its memory conflicts with other stuff.
