260306 2004-08-10 10:28:00 My Dad's Pocket PC locked up, and he reset it, and it locked up again or something. He rung Australia help desk for it, and they said go to some PDA place in Auckland. And they said that it is dead. If he wants it fixed it will cost about $400, so you might as well buy a new one.

How can it die that badly? Is there some way we can fix it ourselves do you think?

I thought it was a bit strange. He has had it 2 years, and I don't see how it can just die like that.

Your thoughts/comments please.

260307 2004-08-10 12:48:00 There are several hundred SMD components in it, including several large scale ICs which contain several million transistors.

Why do you then find it difficult to believe it can die? Only one needs to fail ...

These are not user serviceable devices, nor are specialised spares available. Some brands are even glued together for life.

However, there is always the Consumer Guarantees Act that you could discuss with the shop where it was purchased? May make a replacement a bit cheaper if there was an agreement reached that 2 years is less than the expected life?

260308 2004-08-11 03:20:00 Yeah, my Dad's going nuts because it cost a lot of money. I will have to find out how long it was meant to last. mejobloggs (264)
260309 2004-08-11 08:35:00 My Palm V did something similar, couldn't fix it despite multiple resets, so I raced out and bought a Tungsten to replace it. Meantime, the Palm V battery ran right down, dead flat, left like that for some time, and when I recharged it just to see what happened.....it recovered - now given to my daughter and doing fine 6 months later. Probably won't work but may be worth a try. Good luck annie (6010)
260310 2004-08-12 11:15:00 Maybe I shall leave it for a long time.

If you turn it on, it turns on at what i call the bios of a pocket pc, and sits there. Maybe it doesnt recognise the harddrive anymore or something?

It is obviously the economy model, the Deluxe Pro Turbo XP model will emit lifelike groans, multi coloured smoke and a most convincing shower of sparks when it dies, At this stage, I do not think an upgrade (Die In Style) kit is available for your model,
