| 260004 | 2004-08-09 22:04:00 | I recently changed to Firefox from I.E. (best move I ever made.) However, on visiting a new site I needed to enter some data and kept getting an error report refusing my input. Basically it said that it would only accept numbers in two specific areas but entering numbers didn't help. It also said that it didn't support HTML. I returned to IE, used exactly the same data and inputted it first go - no sweat. Any ideas - it's not a biggy but I can see this cropping up again if I don't sort it....? | bazmeister (3216) | ||

I think Air NZ reservations is problematic, and of course Windows Update. Basically I use Firefox 99% of the time, and just use IE for those outdated websites where the designers have either been too lazy or too captured by Microsoft to be bothered to ensure that other browsers work. | 260006 | 2004-08-09 22:21:00 | Following on from John's reply, this isn't a fix either, but Firefox does have a couple of 'extensions' that help you to work around this problem. 'IE View' will add an option to your right-click menu to view a page/link in IE, and 'Windows Update' will give you a menu option that opens IE at the windows update site. Both can be found here (update.mozilla.org). Hope this helps, Darren |

| 260008 | 2004-08-09 22:29:00 | Email the webmaster and/or owner of the site and tell them that their website is only optimised for IE. Further, tell them, that like many other people, you do not use IE anymore for security reasons and will therefore no longer be using their services until they have corrected their (sloppy) website to accept input from other browsers. Be aware that some sites that use forms (user input) rewuire Java but, that should not be an issue for Firefox unless you have it disabled in Tools > Options > Web Features. Cheers Murray P |

| 260009 | 2004-08-09 22:36:00 | I just had to make an AirNZ reservation, and tried out IE View, and it works. Simpler than having to go and fire up the opposition if you are already in a session with Firefox. Thanks again. John |

| 260010 | 2004-08-09 22:44:00 | That's an interesting concept Murray! Trying to get Air NZ to change, I mean... I am involved in a project at the moment where it has been interesting to observe an attempt by one of the key players to stop the developer's plan to ensure that the product would be compatible with all browsers. The resistance was based on costs. The key player's attempt to stymie this aspect of the plan did not get any support from the others in the project team. Good one! John |

Lol, I've emailed a number of sites and actually received replies several times although, that is the exception rather than the rule. The vast majority of these sites are commercial, talk $$ as in lost revenue and they are more likely to listen. I don't usually come right out and say they have lost a sale because most times I'm checking out their products technical info, but I don't necessarily want them to know that, implication can travel well if the words are chosen carefully. As for Air NZ, I've not had problems with them in Mozilla or Firefox, nor any of the other domestic airlines. So, all you good people who come across a crudy website, politely, let them know. Incompatibility or broken Flash are a couple of my pet hates. What gets up your nose? > I am involved in a project at the moment where it has > been interesting to observe an attempt by one of the > key players to stop the developer's plan to ensure > that the product would be compatible with all > browsers. | 260012 | 2004-08-09 23:25:00 | Lovely response Murray :-) Maybe the problem I had with AirNZ was not browser related - I haven't tried again. I thought I was having a similar browser related problem with Ascent's website, but when I checked with IE the same problem existed there - either their data base had got messed up or I had wrongly inputted information some months ago because the info showed up in the wrong fields. >What gets up your nose? Actually Flash gets up my nose, and I do like the Firefox extension that ?Chill? referred us to that gives you the option to play Flash or not. Until I had that, I didn't realise how much Flash content we are downloading; most of it offensive advertising. I hate those sites that won't let you go any further until you have sat through the Flash intro. Grrrrr. >Is this guy a tech or bean counter?? Actually neither. He represents a contractor who is involved in putting together the content of the product (I am deliberately being obscure here). I am not completely clear why he objected, but wondered whether he thought the compatibility issue had implications for him meeting his timelines as well as an impact on his profit (ie his firm may not have contemplated this in their budget and timelines, and he may have thought it was going to cost more in time and resources than "just a line or two". I had never met him before and don't know his level of technical knowledge. Maybe he was driven by anxiety. |

| 260013 | 2004-08-09 23:26:00 | Thanks for that ... I've picked up that extension and had a trial run with it. I think it's good to go back to IE occasionally, if only to see how painfully slow it is.... Once again - good advice. Bazza |
