| 260816 | 2004-08-12 05:57:00 | Hi everyone, does anyone know if there's a way to make programs detect Windows Me as windows 98 or XP? There's been quite a few programs lately (ie Adobe Acrobat - not reader, and Macromedia Studio MX 2004 demos) that don't install on Windows ME, but will install on Windows 98se, 2000 or XP. It seems pretty odd (to me anyway) that they skip windows Me out, which is a pain in the bum for ME users (ok, we are a pitiful minority) like me. I've heard that Windows Me is pretty much Win98 with System restore (ooh I can smell controversy here) ... which should mean that the programs that can run on Win98 should be able to run on a ME box. Is there any way (ie a registry fix) to make an ME computer show up to the installers as a Win98 one? Maybe someone out there has spotted the same problem and done something about it. And don't tell me to upgrade... I'm too poor :P |

It was run in autoexec.bat, and captured one of the INT24s. I forget what it was called --- someone will remember. It just might work because W98/Me are still DOS based and you can make autoexec.bat run. | Graham L (2) | ||

Amazingly, setver is available as an external command in W95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP . Have a look at a few of the links ... the third or so looks as if it will give you the correct syntax. Let us know how you get on. |
