260660 2004-08-11 22:43:00 My colleagues Win 98 machine with AVG (but no firewall) now refuses to see our network until about 9:45am each day.

This is evident through no internet or e-mail access.

I closed AVG to see what would happen and Voila! - online.

Scheduling is enabled (updates) for 9:52am. Coincidence?

For some reason I'm supposed to now know what the problem is and fix it.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

260661 2004-08-11 23:52:00 afaik avg dosn't have anything to do with internet connection (unlike other antivirus) . i would check what is running on the pc and see what is trying to use the lan/net (firewall) .

also check the logon setup and network setup . it sounds like something on the server is timeing out then the pc either gets a new ip or password .

260662 2004-08-12 02:34:00 It's to give time to read the morning paper, and get the third cup of coffee drunk. Then the day can start. ;-) Graham L (2)
260663 2004-08-12 06:39:00 Well yes Graham, but we don't normally tell people that.

Tweak'e has a good thought. Maybe I'm looking at this from the wrong end. I'll try to see this particular machine from our main PC (a quasi server) tomorrow morning. Certainly couldn't see the network from the problem computer.

I realise AVG shouldn't have anything to do with networking or internet access - but the fact is that when I disabled it, I got a connection.

I've installed the new Adaware, run Spytbot, and AVG on all four PCs in the last 3 days but the problem started last week. A few bits of spyware detected (diallers) but no real problems.

Why would a virus checker stop internet connection? We use jetstream through a D-Link router/hub.

260666 2004-08-12 10:24:00 just a thought .....what ver of AVG are you useing ? the AVG 7 pro has auto update that may hook into the tcp/ip.....mmmmmmmm tweak'e (174)
260667 2004-08-12 11:05:00 To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.;) Old Tom (5871)
260668 2004-08-14 03:05:00 Not using AVG Pro. This has me stumped.

We don't actually use a server as such, the internet connection works through our router/hub so each machine including the problem one connects independently. How and why would the D-Link 504 router refuse a connection for one machine until 9:45am?

It has to be the PC itself. I suppose AVG have a forum so I might have a look there. Thanks for your thoughts.

260669 2004-08-14 03:51:00 A firewall can have rules which allow access to services only during certain hours. Your router might have such a rule "accidentally" installed.

If you haven't got the crossword done by 9:45, you're slow. :D
