2004-08-12 03:13:00 | Hey you guys... You're scaring the hell out of me. I've also turned off automatic updates AND went into that defaults thing in control, chose custom, and put firefox as the default webrowser and unticked Microsoft, press ok, then go back in a check and they have changed it again. If noone can tell me how to stop my computer being taken over for the SP2 update, I'm going to stay offline. I want to wait till I get the CD. Please tell me what I can do to avoid being caught out like the original poster and one of the reply posters ? Marg

2004-08-12 03:24:00 | > You're scaring the hell out of me. Sorry :8}, The only reason why I posted this question was because I have a small bandwidth cap & I dont have much left > I've also turned off automatic updates I am guessing you are using SP1? Not a RC of SP2? If you are NOT using a RC of SP2 then changing the setting in under automatic updates in win xp SP1 to Notify me But Dont automatically download or install them then that should do it :) Hope this helps

2004-08-12 03:29:00 | Dont pull your hair our! It would seem from the above postings that the SP2 update is only happening automatically for those that have already downloaded and run the beta version. Maybe someone will confirm that or otherwise. Perhaps one's firewall can be set to block any auto contact with MS and download? Seriously you do have to read the MS fine print to see what you are agreeing to when upgrading or installing programs, especially Micro$oft. If you dont like the fine print, then you dont have to install.

Now can we let this thread die before more people get worried? |

2004-08-12 03:46:00 | Hello, I also have SP2 RC2 on my computer . But I'm not having any automatic downloading . Probably because as soon as I installed the beta service pack I disabled the "automatic updates" service . To do this type "services . msc" at the start/run prompt (no quotation marks of course) and stop and disable that beastie . Unless of course you like it . . Dan
