260764 2004-08-12 02:42:00 Hi all,
Friend recently bought computer.
First day online, virus, we suspect blaster.
Since then he has not bothered using it since he cant get online without it restarting every few minutes.
I suggested that since he has only just got it and there are no files need saving, why not just do a reinstal of XP. Before going online run the MS CD that I have with windows updates to Feb, then go online and get the rest and then instal AVG.

Will this work? I was curious as to how deep into the system these virus will go. I dont want to go to that trouble if it dont work.

Cheers
Sam

260765 2004-08-12 02:48:00 Also make sure you turn on the win xp firewall or install a firewall like zone alarms or something like that. stu120404 (268)
260766 2004-08-12 02:59:00 Probably work. It might pay to pick up a computer magazine which has a late AVG on its cover CD first. That way, you could be pretty well protected before connecting. Graham L (2)
260767 2004-08-12 03:28:00 Stu 's comment maybe small but is of vital importance. Before going online, turn the XP firewall on . If you go online without a firewall, you will be re-infected by a worm fairly quickly, therefore back to a reload...infinitum.. Pheonix (280)
260768 2004-08-12 03:33:00 Infact, why re-install, take around a floppy with Stinger (vil.nai.com) and run it. (It doesn't need installing). This will clean out the worm.
Then turn on XP firewall, go onto net and update windows and get one of the free Anti virus....

AVG free.grisoft.com
AVAST www.avast.com
Antivir http://www.free-av.com/

260769 2004-08-12 03:52:00 Thanks for the advice guys.
I might do the stinger thing as per Pheonix suggestion. This would save me a trip as he could do this himself.
If this fails then plan b will be reinstal taking heed of the advice above.
My main concern was that the virus/worm could be deeper than the OS?? Not sure what I was thinking here but I just wondered if that was possible.

Stinger normally takes care of the most common worms and viruses. There should be no need for a reinstall after using Stinger unless the computer has something that Stinger does not deal with. In that case an online scan and/or AVG will likely fix the problem.

260771 2004-08-12 08:26:00 If you're still shutting down go to start/run and type shutdown -a
that'll halt it for a while till u remove it.

260772 2004-08-13 10:26:00 Stinger did the trick.
Nice advice.
Stinger is now going to be a permanent addition to my memory stick.

Thanks again.

260773 2004-08-13 10:59:00 Stinger is great. It is updated fairly regularly so don't forget to download the latest version when it is released. ;-) Susan B (19)
