| 260764 | 2004-08-12 02:42:00 | Hi all, Friend recently bought computer. First day online, virus, we suspect blaster. Since then he has not bothered using it since he cant get online without it restarting every few minutes. I suggested that since he has only just got it and there are no files need saving, why not just do a reinstal of XP. Before going online run the MS CD that I have with windows updates to Feb, then go online and get the rest and then instal AVG. Will this work? I was curious as to how deep into the system these virus will go. I dont want to go to that trouble if it dont work. Cheers Sam |

| 260768 | 2004-08-12 03:33:00 | Infact, why re-install, take around a floppy with Stinger (vil.nai.com) and run it. (It doesn't need installing). This will clean out the worm. | 260769 | 2004-08-12 03:52:00 | Thanks for the advice guys. I might do the stinger thing as per Pheonix suggestion. This would save me a trip as he could do this himself. If this fails then plan b will be reinstal taking heed of the advice above. My main concern was that the virus/worm could be deeper than the OS?? Not sure what I was thinking here but I just wondered if that was possible. |

There should be no need for a reinstall after using Stinger unless the computer has something that Stinger does not deal with. In that case an online scan and/or AVG will likely fix the problem. |
