2013-07-18 08:49:00 | Hi all, thanks for the help previously. We still have a CRT now from the year 2000 and thinking of a LED now as it is slowly showing its age. Slow start-ups and some flicker but it goes away. They had a look at them. 1. In terms of looking at the screens at store is that reliable? Some of the units have significant color differences. Wrong settings by the store? 2. We are looking at a 40-42". LED. Full HD. Don't need Smart. In your experience is there a need to get a 100Hz model or are the normal 50Hz okay? There seems to be a significant price difference here from say non-Smart $799 right up to say $1,299 but is a Smart 3D. The $999 seems to be 50Hz but Smart TV. Are there any non-Smart TV that is 100Hz or not really? Many thanks.

2013-07-18 09:04:00 | Google searching the model numbers the Samsung UA40F5000 is a 40" LED with 100Hz without Smart $799 ..... | Nomad (952) | |
2013-07-18 09:18:00 | Correct the above it's Samsung new tricky system. Their 100 Clear Motion Rate is 50Hz. So question again is 50Hz okay? | Nomad (952) | |
2013-07-18 09:36:00 | For most people 50hz is fine. I'm on my 4th flat screen TV, the first two were early model 40" sony LCD 50hz models without motionflow and both were still great TVs (and both got stolen, bastards). For normal TV and movies you almost never notice anything wrong with them, just the occasional stuttering on fast panning scenes and only really if you are looking for it. 3rd TV was a 46" LCD with a few more features and my current TV is a 60" Plasma and after 3 nice LCD's I'm loving it. Some advantages on both sides but for a big screen at a good price Plasma is worth considering. LED-LCD Lighter Slightly less power consumption Plastic screens are often mat and non reflective - great for daytime viewing or rooms with a lot of windows Better at displaying text and use as a giant PC monitor Plasma Heavier/ more power usage Glass screens, glossy & reflective but look awesome and can be easier to clean - not the best with multiple light sources in the room More natural blacks. No real need for motion smoothing technology as Plasma doesn't suffer lag to the same extent as LCD. Both look great, at the cheaper end plasma tends to look betetr for movies etc and at the expensive end they are all great.

2013-07-18 09:48:00 | Thanks for that :) I know you have listed the points for Plasma. We've just looked at LED for obvious reasons but in 2013 are Plasmas still ok in your opinion? They pretty much use it for TV only, game console and computers are in the other rooms. Talkhost, news, dramas meaning soaps and action series and their Hong Kong kung fu shows. We would look at no more than 42" the 50" is a bit too wide in the current space :p So going to Plasma wasn't a slightly step back

2013-07-18 13:29:00 | I'd personally go LED, and it's what we did after a lot of looking around, as well as in-person and online feature / look comparisons. We went for a 200Hz and it's *real* nice, I would highly recommend paying the extra for a 100Hz... Smart features / 3D, not a *big* deal really IMO. I use my Raspberry Pi with XBMC for everything "smart"... works way better too! :D Also, nothing is too big in the living room ! :D

2013-07-18 23:19:00 | I'd also recommend LED + 100Hz.. my folks have a reasonably new Samsung 40" and it has a great picture. My older Samsung LCD is good to, but the colours on the LED seem a little better :D | autechre (266) | |
2013-07-19 00:14:00 | TLDR: - both are great buy whichever you like the look of. Plasma is still worth considering, LED is the latest and certainly very nice but both technologies have their advantages and there is no clear winner when you read all the comparisons. For me personally the main advantage of plasma is in price, you can get huge TV's much cheaper by going plasma. My 60" Samsung cost me $1600 and I've seen it on special as low as $1399. I would buy an LED TV too if price wasn't in the decision but my new plasma is the best looking TV I've owned and the previous 46" sony LCD was a very nice screen that I'm comparing it to. And not just because of the obvious size difference. The thing is LCD (and LED is still LCD - just with a different backlight) has some inherent disadvantages such as screen lag, lack of true blacks, and motion stutter. All of these issues are pretty muched fixed by getting the better 100hz models with motion flow or equivalent technologies and the TV's look awesome. If you buy the cheaper models however, which are still very good for the most part, then plasma which doesn't have these issues tends to end up looking better. Don't get me wrong, I've owned a 50hz LCD with no motionflow and it was a very nice TV, no complaints at all. So my opinion is for cheap models go plasma, if you can afford it and prefer the latest go LED. Don't stress over it though, look at the model you want in the shop and if it looks good and the price is right go for it. And if that cheaper model using different technology sitting across the shop looks just as good to you, get that one instead.
