1349123 2013-07-16 23:24:00 Hi all, I am just looking for ways you guys manage your phones.

Esp in this weather unless I have real work or photography, I find that I am using less of my big computer and more of my laptop but I use it more of a tablet in the lounge. I'm slowly mirgrating to a sync calendar and with email a MAPI approach since I like the Outlook archival properties. Outlook is also slow with with IMAP. I've kept my ISP email address since the dialup days, have only kept it b/c I switched it to a dialup hourly plan and haven't logged on after switching ISPs. The late nineties :D

With Android thru the main contacts icon, you can only save it on the sim or phone which both are not synched so the only real option is google online synched. Is this what you guys do? Do you guys still use the sim or phone memory anymore? Although one could use hotmail/yahoo contacts to display it thru the main contacts icon, they can only add it thru its website or thru its app which is a bit more fussy.

When you go to the main contacts icon and into the display options. What settings are you guys using mostly? Are any of you synching it with other apps like FB, Skype, YM etc? I have been doing that and then you may end up with duplicates do you guys then use the Android "join" function? This join fuction is just on the phone cosmetic/display reasons right? It doesn't change the raw data right?

Finally regarding cloud services. Does Android have an affliation with Dropbox? Under File Manager I can choose local or add a dropbox. Although I can install G Drive and others at least with the original OS on my phone it seems to be a tighter relationship with Dropbox? Do many of you use the cloud services as your primary drive in other words do you save and edit files directly there and not on your local memory so it can be quickly retrieved from other devices. Or do you install other sync software to automate that process to minimise out of sync files. I go online more than open/close files but just interested what you guys do.....

:thanks:

1349124 2013-07-17 00:45:00 No your contacts *should* be sync'd with your Google account. If they're not, it's coz you've set it up that way, coz by default they ought to be.

The Join function works quite well, and yeah it is mostly just a "cosmetic" thing but it does a good job of it.

Dropbox is just there presumably because your Samsung or HTC phone bundled Dropbox with it. A Nexus device doesn't come with it. Google+ has the Instant Backup functionality that I use for all the photos / videos.
I don't keep any "documents" on the phone itself, but Google Drive is used for viewing / editing them as the need arises :)

Do yourself still use phone or sim memory as a backup or have you left that now? My LG defaults to phone memory I had to change it to Google online. I guess this is a Android thing. Online syn at least thru the main avenue is via Google, if this was a Windows Phone it would probably only do it via Live.com :D

Well unless from day (1) I copied contacts from sim to phone. But I did do a factory reset recently ... upon boot the default memory was phone unless the reset didn't reset everything.

1349126 2013-07-17 02:37:00 Nah never use the SIM memory or anything... If it's all on the Google Cloud, it means you can factory wipe or get a new phone, and it'll pull it all down just like your current one, all automatically!! :) Chilling_Silence (9)
1349127 2013-07-17 04:35:00 When I got my phone All my contacts were on my SIM card but it has limited contact info so I copied it into the phone memory, then after a while synched that into google - ended up with 3 of everyone... So I've deleted everything else and just rely on Google to store them now - works really well. The Best part is when I switched from Vodafone to Telecom nothing changed from a user point of view - no need to transfer contacts they are just there already. Same when I upgraded form a galaxy S to an S3 - contacts and apps all transferred automatically.

I don't deliberately sync with other apps, but something sneaky is going on somewhere because my phone seems to autocomplete google searches based on things I've searched for on the PC.... I think when I used my Gmail account to log into windows 8 it's done some linking somewhere. Kinda cool and disturbing all at the same time.

1349128 2013-07-17 04:48:00 Yes Google collects data off your other Google account. I think web history etc... are in the Google settings. I have sync up Firefox cos I don't use Google chrome on the PC. But I think even if you don't use Chrome, some suite software via USB syncs your Firefox/IE and dumps it to Chrome or the vanilla Internet app on the phone. Ditto with Gmail, Youtube etc etc. Google searches etc. You would probably have Google login saved on the PC like many pple incl myself.

Yep, I have got duplicates. But via the settings command I can control what I see via display options. So I restrict like just google online and no sim and no phone memory or any other combination.

I recently installed a SMS backup app. This one backs it up to Google and does in the background auto synching.
