1348660 2013-07-11 22:24:00 The inner planets are getting somewhat ignored.

On Mercury, there's a weird "X marks the spot"

The last landing on Venus was 1984, which lasted less than an hour.

The ESA "Venus Express" was successful in 2005, but didn't land.

The last trip attempted to Venus was Japan in 2010, which failed.

This mission is only in planning stages

And flying towards the Sun has an obvious downside. I think mars draws the most attention because it's the closest thing to another earth in our solar system and easier to get to than most of the rest.

The "X" is pretty cool, but much like the face on mars I'm sure it's just a random natural formation that hapends to look like something.

1348662 2013-07-11 23:39:00 Its easy to see why, Venus is just too hard to do.

"The temperature on Venus does not vary like it does on our home world. It is 460 degrees C day or night, at the poles or at the equator."
...thats hot enough to melt lead...
"The atmosphere is constantly churned by hurricane force winds reaching 360 kph. "
"The atmospheric pressure at the planet's surface is 92 times that of Earth's"
"Venus is shrouded by an opaque layer of highly reflective clouds of sulfuric acid"

1348663 2013-07-12 20:29:00 If you rotate the X by 90 degrees you realise it's actually a 4, not an X, and the round, raised area the 4 is on is a hatch, and beneath that is Thunderbird4 ready for take off (I trust 4 wasn't the submarine). Paul.Cov (425)

...it was. :xmouth:

Mars is boring. So are most other planets.

If you want something truly intertesting, look at the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, Europa, Titan and Enceladus.

We have even discovered signs of what could be life on Titan. I hope I live long enough to see a manned mission.
