2013-07-19 09:54:00 | Friend of mine had a bad crash out up at Turoa around the same time of the shake which we felt up here. They made a few excuses up for the loss of control and speed wobbles and ice, soon as they heard about the quake the excuses really came out blaming the quake for knocking them off balance....lol | coldfront (15814) | |
2013-07-19 10:39:00 | wai, you will have to lead me by the hand !, what post was the 5.7 mentioned on ?. Lurks. It wasn't, I posted the original just after it happened, but the stats are: NZST: Friday, July 19 2013 at 9:06:39 am Intensity: severe Depth: 16 km Magnitude: 5.7 Location: 30 km east of Seddon Just a few more stats, geonet only posts the latest 3 on that original link. Better summary www.geonet.org.nz www.stuff.co.nz SWMBO was a jabbering idiot so she said, the building she works in is one of the ones that's been marked as needing earthquake strengthening . Had to call her as last time wgtn had a quake I was told off ( again) :xmouth: for not calling to make sure she was OK. I called her just after it happened, she was under her desk still. Still not as bad as the ChCh quakes, not much anyone can do really when they hit except hang on and hope for the best - When the earth decides its time to move we all are just here for the ride.

2013-07-19 11:54:00 | wai, uh huh, go with the hanging on. Only thing was we were sitting down for lunch at the kitchen table for the first time in years, when the February one struck and both wife and I were kicked out of our chairs and dumped to the floor. No injuries from the flying crockery, etc, etc, being tossed out of overhanging cupboards fridge/freezer, lost a lot of beer tooo. What's the saying now: drop, ?, hold, balls to that with the Feb quake, it held all the cards that day. Even the June ones threw us about too. Sorry to see it upset quite a few people in Wgtn. and around. Lurks.

I think now that the rest of the country has seen what has happened to ChCh they are a lot more nervous when they get a shake because once the wobbling starts you don't know how big it is going to get so it can be quite frightening. Hell, WE are still nervous when we get yet another decent rumble! :p |

2013-07-20 23:07:00 | Are you guys still feeling rattled? My GeoNetQuake shake app has been dinging every minute or so all morning with reports of wobbles in the area of Friday's rumble. Most are under 3.0 magnitude but the largest was a 4.4 just 30 minutes ago. | FoxyMX (5) | |

2013-07-21 20:00:00 | pctek, from whence did our 6.3's come from, beside the Lyttleton extinct volcano, that's where. The Akoroa one was silent thank goodness. Lurking. While earthquakes may occur in Auckland, we are located in one of the lowest earthquake activity parts of New Zealand mainly because of the 300km distance from the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone. The Wairoa North Fault is the only identified active fault in Auckland although there is no evidence it has been active within the past 10,000 years. The Kerepehi Fault in the Firth of the Thames is a potential source of damaging earthquake. Aucklands strongest ever known quake was the 1891 Waikato Heads earthquake, which had a magnitude of between 5.5 and 6.0. Yet the only damage was some plaster and a chimney in Onehunga falling and some broken pottery and crockery.
