1348790 2013-07-14 06:12:00 I am fed up with our Russel Hobbs not doing Vogels long enough on high.
So will watch this with great care.

I bought a Russel Hobbs years ago because it was big enough to take slices of bread baked in a Panasonic bread machine....as mentioned several times already, a waste of money because the elements don't get hot enough. I consigned it to a shelf in the garage. I think they must have been designed to run off 250v instead of 230v, or something like that, they only glow a very dull red.

It is difficult to get toasters deep enough to take a decent sized slice, but I bought a Sunbeam a few years ago which is ok for machine baked bread.

1348791 2013-07-14 07:34:00 I have a cheap old black and decker that's of unknown age - very basic and very reliable.
I usually toast frozen bread and I like mine quite dark - the B&D works well for this. I've bought fancier toasters occasionally, and been given them. I always end up back with old faithful when they wear out or prove to be hopeless.

1348793 2013-07-15 02:21:00 The best toaster we have is the old one at the beach, with sides that tilt down and support the bread. Gets really hot and the timer is called 'watch out for burning". But the toast is magic. Richard (739)

1348795 2013-07-15 07:17:00 So FoxyMX, which toast did you get and have you road tested it yet? :)

I think I need a new toaster. My vogels bread was basically untoasted on one side.

1348796 2013-07-16 10:42:00 Ended up with a Breville "A Bit More" toaster (www.briscoes.co.nz) after hubby took a shine to the fancy cranberry paint job.

It has nice big slots for the buns and thick slices of bread that I like to cook up and I am pleased to report that it toasted my multigrain perfectly evenly. The frozen Vogels took several goes with the "bit more" button to get it lightly browned but a fresh loaf will probably cook up nicely in one hit. Since it is rated at 1050 watts maximum it isn't super-fast at toasting but probably takes pretty much the same time as our old one. I still need to experiment to find which setting to use for each type of bread but I am really happy with the results so far. It was a good choice and, as a bonus, it looks rather trendy in the kitchen. :p

1348797 2013-07-16 10:53:00 I note it is twice the price of the Russel H, so hope it is twice as good. Cicero (40)
