1367955 2014-02-18 01:17:00 I don't seem to be getting a clear answer through search so I was hoping someone on the forum has an answer.
A client wants to buy the Microsoft Surface RT (not the pro version)

As I understand the RT comes with Office 2013 RT

They have Office 2010 on their desktop computer.
They want to know if they plug a flash drive with their office 2010 documents
into the Surface RT edit them through Office 2013 RT
will they be able to work with them again on their desktop Office 2010?

Thank you:nerd:

1367956 2014-02-18 01:27:00 I would say you can. Only thing (I think) is Office 2010 can't open PDF files, but you can save something as a PDF file. Office 2013 can open and save PDF files Speedy Gonzales (78)

1367958 2014-02-18 03:32:00 The biggest difference between the Surface RT and the Surface Pro comes in how they approach traditional desktop programs such as Photoshop, iTunes, and other desktop PC staples. The Surface with Windows RT can’t run traditional desktop programs. Instead, Windows RT tablets can only run apps downloaded from the Windows Store. If you need to install a desktop program on your Windows tablet, don’t buy one running Windows RT.

The Surface with Windows Pro, by contrast, works just like a desktop PC that’s been flattened into a thin tablet. That model lets you install nearly any traditional desktop program that ran on Windows 7. Plus, the Surface Pro can run apps from the Windows Store.

You can’t install desktop programs on the Surface with Windows RT, but Microsoft pre-installed an important program for free: Microsoft’s Office Home and Student Version. That includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Those programs, combined with a battery that lasts all day, have compelled many purchasers to choose the Surface RT over the Surface Pro.

The Surface Pro, by contrast, doesn’t include Microsoft Office. However, that Surface model packs enough power to let you buy and install Microsoft Office itself. (The Surface Pro does include a trial version of Office 365, Microsoft’s online, subscription-based version of Office.)

So the above is background info.

In regards to your question Office is Office, it might need to convert and run compatibility on the files but it shouldn't be an issue.

Apparently the Surface RT comes with Office already installed (www.microsoft.com)

They may want to be aware that Office for PC is written for a desktop computing environment so it is more likely to be more of a battery hog than something that was written with power efficiency in mind - eg the Surface RT

If they were to edit or make changes to the document on an Android or iPad device they would have much better power usage. iPads can do it here (gigaom.com)

Android tablets can also edit MS Office files. here (www.pcworld.com)

Something else to be aware of, at least half of the storage on a Windows Tablet is used up for the OS. This is not the case with iPads and Android devices.

Yes you can use a USB stick to make up for the difference but that kinda defeats the purpose of buying a device with 32 or 64GB of storage.

1367960 2014-02-18 03:35:00 There are features that are in office 2013, that arent available in RT tho. (office.microsoft.com)

And Office RT doesnt inc Outlook unless it's 8.1 preview or RT

Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think this is a Surface restriction.
Office Home and Student does not include Outlook etc and that is the version installed.
