1367907 2014-02-17 06:15:00 My daughter has started Uni and lives in a residential hall. The wifi dosent reach the second floor, is there a way to boost the Wifi signal in her room? I think there is an eathnet cable in the room, can I get something to connect to that cable to convert to wifi? thanks for any help. DonnyM (17231)
1367908 2014-02-17 06:17:00 If theres an ethernet cable, the computer should have an ethernet connection on it. Plug it in. See if it works Speedy Gonzales (78)
1367909 2014-02-17 06:18:00 She wants wifi to work Iphone and I pad, Thanks DonnyM (17231)
1367910 2014-02-17 06:20:00 She'll have to ask whoever deals with the wifi to fix it. So there's a better signal. They've probably limited it so you can only go to certain sites Speedy Gonzales (78)
1367911 2014-02-17 06:21:00 As long as the ethernet is alive, you can plug in a wireless access point. It may need to be setup to change the IP address range from its default to what ever IP range the current one is.

TP -Link is a good brand. If shes not interested in getting top end performance then these ones are not to bad. www.ascent.co.nz or www.ascent.co.nz plugs into the Ethernet, and converts it to wireless.

1367913 2014-02-17 09:47:00 You better ask first about the ethernet even if it live. Do you know if ethernet is provided for her use already and doesn't need to pay a fee for it? Esp if that is in her room. One time I found the phone jack was live in my room at the halls of residence I subsequently got a bill when they called in the contractor(s) to find out which room was using the phone .... as each phone jack didn't have their own line - they used shared lines for the premise. I used it for dialup internet in the day. If it is outside the room I don't think you should just go pluging in a WiFi extender like in the corridor etc... Nomad (952)
