1367678 2014-02-15 20:41:00 I have a Hitachi 2.5 500GB SATA HD which is corrupted. Lap Top will not start up” Missing OS “ message appears. I have a SATA to USB External HD enclosure and have tried to re-format using WIN 7 but get an error message” Unable to complete format”. I have not tried to do this before. Is it possible to re-format a HD that returns this error message? Do I need a program other than WIN7 to re-format with? Am I missing out some steps? Swampy (2426)
1367679 2014-02-15 20:59:00 If it doesnt have a dvd/cd on it. Make an ISO of the Win7 dvd. Then use something like Rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/). Then will write the ISO to a USB flash drive. Then make the USB flash drive the bootdisk in the BIOS.

Then boot from it. If this brings up errors, while you're trying to install Win7, you may have to replace the hdd

1367680 2014-02-15 21:20:00 Hi Speedy. The HD is in an external HD enclosure. So I am running Win 7 on the laptop trying to re-format another HD when I get the error messages. If I download Rufus, will that fix/ re-format the corrupted HD in the enclosure? Swampy (2426)
1367681 2014-02-15 21:44:00 So you can boot into windows on one of the laptops then (You have 2 laptops)?? The laptop hdd thats corrupted is another laptop?? If it is, how are you trying to format the hdd?? Through disk management?

If you've got 2 laptops, you could put the corrupt hdd back into the other laptop, make an ISO use rufus as above. If it works OK the setup should let you reformat / reinstall windows on the corrupt hdd

In short, no, the HDD is most likely stuffed, and should not try to be resurrected, buy a new one.
Rufus looks to be only for making bootable USB/flash drives (if you dont have an optical drive in your laptop).

1367683 2014-02-15 21:52:00 Thats what rufus is for. It creates a bootable windows disk from an ISO (onto a flash drive). I used it, to install Win7 on this netbook. Because it doesnt have a cd Speedy Gonzales (78)
1367684 2014-02-15 21:54:00 Thanks Speedy, I'll have a go. If that fails I'll have to follow feersumendjinn's advice!!! Swampy (2426)
1367685 2014-02-15 21:56:00 As long as all you want to do is format (wipe the drive) and its in an external enclosure, you may find that Windows on its own will throw a hissy fit ( had that happen countless times with external drives).

You can try installing some third party partitioning software, theres plenty about, personally I use www.disk-partition.com If that wont format the drive then its possible the drive is damaged in someway.

If you are trying to install W7 via the external drive you WILL get that message, as its not a valid way to install W7.
