1348231 2013-07-08 07:25:00 Just been trialling out the 8.1 version. I can understand those who embrace it, may find it ok with video, pix, maps etc. With the metro mode can you fire up IE or MS Word and resize the window so you are not reading an news article left to right with a 23 inch screen  And for those who have embraced it how often do you find yourself using this metro? This is more consumer Joe/Jane, not the office type.

Thanks.

1348232 2013-07-08 07:36:00 I'm using Metro right now :D

Using Metro IE with Twitter docked to the side - the ability to snap apps (especially Twitter) is why I upgraded :p

IE is available in a desktop version, and Word is only in the desktop, for now.

1348233 2013-07-08 08:58:00 Mainly whenever i'm using a tablet. I find it to be a better browsing experience using IE in metro mode rather than a desktop browser. Also use it for searching/launching (i find it great for finding system settings quickly), but don't use many metro apps other than IE (except for some Solitaire and other basic games downloaded from the Windows Store). eliasp (17122)

Yeah I've noticed wanting to use Metro on my Surface more than my desktop... although it is useful for launching as you say.

1348235 2013-07-08 21:43:00 Hardly ever. Progressively changing all the file associations to launch the desktop applications when one of the new apps pisses me off. I like 8 in general but I think metro apps on the desktop need more work, particularly with regards to switching back and forth between desktop apps and metro ones. dugimodo (138)

This is one of my biggest annoyances with Win8. Most of the default apps for pics, videos etc are metro apps which suck compared to their desktop counterparts.

It should have been more context aware i.e if you're in desktop mode, open the desktop version.

Once you install your own apps and make them the default, Win8 is a little nicer :D
