| 260984 | 2004-08-12 13:31:00 | Why is PressF1 so slow, even on my 256K jetstream connection? It takes at least 15-20 seconds to load each page, with a wait before anything happens. Pinging 'pressf1.pcworld.co.nz' only takes 53ms average, so it's not a network problem or anything. Honestly, browsing the site feels just like the old 37.6k dialup to slingshot I had to face for two days when I bought a new router. And just to rule my connection out, I usually get about 31.5KB/s when downloading, and an average PressF1 size page takes about 5 seconds to load. Anybody know what's up with it? |

I have found that logging in before I start browsing speeds things up as the longer threads are split into pages but the savings are only marginal. I tried logging off and loading the 89-reply topic on page 2 (pc build advice) and the 4 second load went out to 12 seconds. That's still a lot better than your times. | Raymondo (5284) | ||

| 260991 | 2004-08-13 05:48:00 | try using Firefox. I find it loads pages faster. (i timed it, wat a sad life) | fus1_n (3818) | ||
| 260992 | 2004-08-13 06:33:00 | I'm always automatically logged in on PF1, but just timed the home page to load in 34 seconds. Even more than I'd estimated! Hmm, closer to home.... I have tried a new (newly aquired I mean) DSE router, a SpeedTouch USB modem, and a LynkSys router. And a 40k dialup connection. They all loaded the pages in about the same time. As I said, our connection does indeed perform at 256k, and ping time is around 53ms. I don't get it. Other NZ sites are fine. I blame XTRA. I'm switching to Orcon now, not because of this but because you get: 256k downstream, 128k upstream Unlimited data with no speed limiting or anything, national and international Static IP address No rule against serving $49.95 a month, no line charges from Telecom Anyway, I'm used to 38.6k so I can put up with the slowness just fine. | 260993 | 2004-08-13 08:24:00 | Hi George I have 256k connection with Xtra. It takes 12 seconds inclusive to load "NZ City", my home page plus Pressf1 . From there it takes an average of 3 seconds to load each page. But then I am in Auckland (things take longer in the capital !?). Misty ]:) PS - Seriously though, it is too easy to blame Xtra - there must be another factor. |
