Hmmm, I wonder... are MS still offering a reward for dobbing in people who use pirated software ?:| No most of their software is not free and even when you have paid your hard earned cash for it you are unlikely to own it, MS tends to hold that privilege very dear. It also depends on your definition of "free" free as in free beer or free as in freedom. Definitely not the latter, have a good read of an MS EULA before you give the big tick or OK on that "free" download ;) Free updates, nah... built in to the price if you've purchased a retail or OEM license, if your on a corporate subscription then updates are pay as you go if you want them or not, that's how I understand that to work anyway. IMO, hate is perhaps a bit strong a word to use, yes there may be some of those kicking around but generally they can be discounted. In the main you may find people to be cynical, suspicious, a little paranoid, knowledgeable, frustrated, ideological, feeling fleeced, been here done that cripes here we go again, jalous, apathetic, fanboys of one breed or another, ignorant, opinionated, users, once bitten twice shy, ....., etc, etc. If 5 or 6 to of these apply to yourself then, you are probably a reasonable and balanced human being :D Cheers Murray ;P |

| 260952 | 2004-08-12 08:38:00 | Nothing to do with tall poppies, I'd say a mistrust of a power-mad monopolistic company that countries throughout the world have brought or tried to bring court cases againt MS for misuse of monoply power. Even the Americans home of free enterprise recognised in the 1890s that monopolies were bad and brought in anti-trust laws. These were the laws under which MS were indicted for anti-competitive behaviour. There are hundreds of web pages detailing the cases against MS, this is just the first one that came up: www.uow.edu.au |

| 260954 | 2004-08-12 08:52:00 | That's just big business . Why would they encourage competition, they're out there to make money like 90% of all business . I don't necessarily agree with some of their tactics or ethics but IMHO you should admire anyone who can start from nothing and create a corporation of MS size . :| |

| 260956 | 2004-08-12 09:14:00 | You can download SP1 or SP2 for WinXP anytime now. Is this not free other than paying for whatever internet connection you have. You can wait for a "free" upgrade from PCWorld. It appears that SP2 for WinXP will be on the next cover disk. So are we asking for a free operating system.? SP2 is not free at all as you have to use an Internet connection to download. You can buy the PCWorld mag and as I work it out this will come with SP2. It is likely that the PCWorld mag will in fact cost money. This assumes you actually go out and buy the magazine other thab sharing with other people. I would like to say that PCWorld is a good magazine but I would not buy it simply for the SP2 update. I buy it for the articles, reviews etc. It always appears the same. Free Antivirus, Free Firewalls, Free operating systems, Free applications.... Free... Free... Free. This does not appear to stop. |
