Telecom has made itself unavailable to the common customer for years the only thing they are good at is billing.

261366 2004-08-16 07:03:00 I agree it is an imperfect world, and as I am now 59, I feel I am running out of time to see the world improved! I just feel that you have to keep fighting people who abuse their power for their own self interest. I know, I am a beached socialist whale, but you have to rely on some ethical base, or we are lost.

Take heart, most of these arch capitalists will eventually go to the wall, trouble is they will take many of us with them in their unenlightened seach for satisfaction in the world through increasing their worldly goods.

They are complete and utter SCUM and stupid too.

261369 2004-08-16 08:16:00 Again, well said John .

Rayondo, I don't think you were on the receiving end of a personal attack . Of course any discussion regarding Telecom (or MS or Linux or downloading music) will arouse polarised discussion and passion because most who come here, and especially those that come to PF1 on a regular basis, have either a stake, an intense interest or both, in such matters . That any discussion will have political and ideological undertones is also no surprise because politics and ideologies are inextricably intertwined in the subject of business systems and ethics, the availability of what is now regarded an socially and economically essential service (telephones that is), that is what the subject matter .

To say that we should pay more in order to support wages and superannuation is a specious argument at best . If say, Telecom did not have total control of the local loop and could not maximise profits at yours and my expense, does that take the money saved by us out of the economy?

Telecom only does this because it is allowed to do so by a relatively weak regulatory environment . If say the roles were reversed with Telstra being in the dominant position who would we be discussing now?

I do not think NZ has the population to support a totally unregulated utility market but even those countries that do have the size have found they needed to put safeguards in place . We have the strange situation where we have a protected dominant player but beneath that it is anything goes, the worst of both worlds IMO .
