The problem is, I don't have WinISO. Will it work if I just use Nero to create a boot CD? There is a link from Bootdisk.com to Microsoft where I can download the boot file, but this boot file is for creating a boot floppy disk.

I've used Xcopy command to copy all the i386 folder to my HDD and have inserted the unattended file, winnt.sif to the i386 folder. Now, all I need is to burn this to CD. Not too sure Nero's boot cd feature will do the job. I think it will boot up but will it load all those necessary drivers for setting up Windows XP like the boot floppy from Microsoft does?

You'll need the boot image from the XP CD to get it to work correctly. If need be, I could always send you mine, if you can't extract it yourself (and add it to the Nero boot CD part).

Here are some instructions on how to get the boot image out of the Windows XP CD using isobuster (which is free), which you should be then able to use with Nero to create your boot CD.

In order to make the new CD bootable it's necessary to add the file Microsoft Corporation.img to the folder SS-Boot we created earlier. There are a number of ways to do this but the easiest is to use ISO Buster. With the Windows XP CD in your CD drive, open ISO Buster. Click on Bootable CD in the left pane then right click Microsoft Computing.img in the right pane, finally clicking Extract Microsoft Corporation.img file.

261087 2004-08-14 11:19:00 Thanks, Mike . It's very kind of you .

Will download the ISObuster later tonight and follow you instructions to complete my project . Will let you know my results, maybe tomorrow or later .

Thanks, once again, Mike and all others who have contributed to this thread .

Press F1 is such a great site .

Mike, where to create this 'SS-Boot' folder?

261089 2004-08-14 13:14:00 Mike, have downloaded ISObuster and extracted the Microsoft img file sucessfully, of course, with your simple and clear instructions! :)

Now, when burning to CD with Nero, do I still have to go through the burn boot cd in Nero or just do an ordinary burn?

One more thing, where do I put the SS-boot folder?

Cheers

Great! :D

You need to burn a boot cd in Nero. Somewhere in the burn cd dialogue it'll ask for a boot image - point it at the Microsoft img file you extracted.

> One more thing, where do I put the SS-boot folder?

You don't need an SS-boot folder ;) In some instructions I've got here for slipstreaming Windows XP SP1 it suggests creating a specific folder for certain stages in the slipstream (eg one folder for the XP CD files, one folder for SP1, one folder for the boot image - the boot image folder was called SS-boot). Just store your img file somewhere where you can find it easily when creating your boot CD. I hope that makes sense.

261091 2004-08-14 22:45:00 I forgot to add something important :)

You need to follow these instructions (especially the part in bold!) when creating your boot CD else it won't work:

To create the boot CD, start Nero Burning ROM, and choose CD-ROM (Boot) in the New Compilation window. On the Boot tab, select Image file under Source of boot image data, and browse to the location of the Microsoft Corporation.img file. Also enable Expert Settings, choosing No Emulation, and changing the Number of loaded sectors to 4 (otherwise it won't boot!) (emphasis added)

Set the ISO tab (in Nero) as follows:

File/Directory name length
Select ISO Level 2 (Max of 31 chars)

Format
Select Mode 1

Character Set
Select ISO 9660

Tick Joilet Secondary Volume Descriptor and directories using Unicode

Relax ISO Restrictions
Tick Allow pathdepth of more than 8 directories
Tick Allow more than 255 characters in path
Tick Do not add the ';1' ISO file version extension

If you don't have the option Do Not Add ";1" ISO file version extension under the Relax ISO Restrictions heading then your Nero version is too old and you'll need to upgrade it :(

Set the Volume Label (on the Label tab) to be the same as your original Windows XP CD.

Click NEW and add your Windows XP files/folders from your HDD, and burn your CD.

Now I hope I haven't left anything out, else you might end up with half-a-dozen coasters :D

Good modrning, Mike .

Thanks for your patience with me . Am I right to say that just store the image file somewhere where I can find it (of course) and not necessarily to be in the CD (going to burn)?

Good modrning to you too :D

Correct. You don't directly burn the img file as a file to the CD, but you must reference it as a boot img in Nero for the bootable CD to work.
