261011 2004-08-12 20:46:00 I recently purchased a new computer which comes with the NOD antivirus software. I am told this is the best around. I had all my data transferred to the new computer. I had been running Norton on the old machine and always' updated the software once a week if not more. The person who transferred the data said he first had to get rid of 45 viruses on my old computer!!!! What the hell is wrong with the Norton antivirus software, have I been wasting my money for the last 5 years. Any comments or suggestions much appreciated. robottom (6018)
261012 2004-08-12 21:17:00 in the last six weeks I've dealt with four machines which had up-to-date 2004 versions of norton and all had viruses which norton kept 'missing' .....well I installed AVG free edition and in each case avg found and killed the viruses......... drcspy (146)

It's improbable that with 45 viruses you still had a functioning old computer.

More likely he was found malware/adware/spyware and wanted to impress you a little.

Norton does not prevent these from taking up residence in your PC, you need Adaware/Spybot and/or Spyware Blaster.

I assume you mean NAV.

He may have been using 'Virus' in a General sense, referring to Trogens, Spybots and Dialers. etc. Things downloaded from the web. NAV doesn't catch these until you run a system wide scan; something you should do once a week. Have you been doing it? The best way is to create a Scheduled Task to automate it.

NAV has kept my system virus free for several years. Vince

261015 2004-08-12 21:41:00 with regard to 'brig's' reply.........ah nope I would not agree that the machine wouln'dt be functioning when it's got 45 viruses ......i very recently had one to deal with the user had no antivirus system and never had ......well after installign and runnign avg it found 9954 infected files......that was a record ! well it was running anyway before removing them but ran a lot better afterwards lol......... drcspy (146)
261016 2004-08-12 21:44:00 Far out when I found 36 on one machine I thought that was a record Rob99 (151)

I don't disagree with that drcspy, but he did say 45 (presumably different)viruses, and not 45 infected files.

Yes
Many people use AVG a free anti-virus program

But if you have NOD I beileve this to be the best altho you have to pay for it
