260941 2004-08-12 10:59:00 My 20month old NEC DVD RW+ ND-1100a won't recognise that a disk has been inserted. Whether you put in a cdr, cdrom, dvdr, dvdrw+ it always asks "Pls. insert a disk into drive d:".

How do these detect that a disc in on the tray anyway? Obviously if by laser and it has had its day, then I'll have to replace the drive.

Could it simply be a replaceable detector/led ? Any feedback on this drive ?

Thanks

260942 2004-08-12 11:26:00 Sounds like a dead laser. They really do not seem to last these days, now that they are so much cheaper. Much like hard drives now, they are a consumable item.

Its remotely possible that it needs cleaning, but thats not usually the case in my experience.

He's right - don't even think about repairing it.
