| 261722 | 2004-08-14 10:58:00 | Dear friends, now I have a problem. Just built in a Dick Smith DVD player and read in the manual that it is not zonefree (as the TV set types are!). It is in fact a NEC 2500D player and there must be ways to work around the fact that I can only switch zones 5 times. It is a nuisance since I came from Europe 3 yewars ao and have stacks of European DVDs. How can I do this. Thanks, Johan, Auckland, thunderace@paradise.net.nz |

Anyway, its a free program that'll change the regions for you, but it has to be installed/running before you start using the drive, as you usually only get 5 changes - it has to be running before the 5 changes run out (if it is, then the 5 changes shouldn't run out, unless you stop using the program in the meantime). Also, try here for a firmware update to make your drive permanently region free. Be sure you know what you're doing though, and you get the right one as you can stuff your drive, and it can/might/will void any warranty :) Mike. |

I have a feeling he's talking about a DVD-ROM drive ?:|, which I'm pretty sure you can't just buy multizoned, hence my instructions for the region killer application etc. Or am I wrong? - he could be talking about a set-top DVD player :) Mike. |

| 261726 | 2004-08-15 01:44:00 | Sorry guys, I did not express myself very clear. The ones you buy for the TV set (like the Mustek I bought from Dick Smith) are zonefree right out of the box. What I bought now is a DVD writer that I built in into my desktop PC and that allows only 5 times a zone change. I had once a Samsung DVD player for my TV that I could make zone-free with just a sequence of button pushes on the remote control. Will try the ideas as proposed here, although the sites that I found till now have dead links for the program for the Zone Killer Cheers Johan |

| 261727 | 2004-08-15 01:51:00 | the tv set dvd players are normally zoned and require chiping or sometimes accessing hidden settings to make them region free. if your lucky some come as zone free :-) the main way to make a pc dvd rom region free is to find a hacked firmware for your drive. once that is appied you can then use one of the many free region tools to defeat the software region settings. the 2nd way is to buy one of the region free software which interacts with the drive to get around the drives region settings. |
