261641 2004-08-14 07:46:00 There seems to be a problem with mounting pen drives with SuSE 9.1 - in particular a Lexar 256M drive I have takes about 3 minutes to mount. There seems to be a number of people with similar problems on the net but no solutions found yet?

Trying to mount at the command prompt does not seem to resolve the situation.

Anyone found a solution?

261642 2004-08-14 19:50:00 when you are in the terminal,
do this command as root

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

and paste the output here.

261643 2004-08-15 02:45:00 It might be that it's a "slow disk", with a reasonable size . It could be that the mount process takes a while to work it out and mount it . After deciding what format it is, it probably checks the filesystem for errors . If you've got a lot of files on it, that might take a while .

Does it mount quicker if the device is empty?

I haven't noticed my CFs mounting slowly, but my biggest one is 64MB . Maybe size does matter . :D

As always, when wondering about what is happening:
tail -20 /var/log/messages (you need to be root for this) .

Next time I boot to SuSE I will do this (but just shows the pen drive when it eventually mounts is using /dev/sdb1 since my old Zip drive grabs the first position).

The pen drive is fairly full but mounts quickly and easily in my main OS - old but trusty RH9 with the 2.4 kernel.

In SuSE it trys to mount to /media/usb-[a long string of numbers].

I have tried making a mount point of /mnt/USB and setting this in the fstab file then trying to mount manually from root console - same effect.

I am wondering if this problem is a SuSE fault or a kernel 2.6 problem? Do people have similar problems say with Fedora using the 2.6 kernel?

261645 2004-08-15 14:43:00 Ive had no issues with my 128MB RunDisk (Even with it partitioned and using a crypto ext2fs). Its instant from the time I hit the Enter key :-)

261646 2004-08-16 04:34:00 Looks as if it's a SuSe problem, and a few people are cross about it. :D

Google with "usb flash + problem + 2.6 + suse". The fourth link ( ...showtopic=3687) to a Suse forum looks to be something for you to follow, John.
