261502 2004-08-14 03:40:00 Anybody care about our flag?

I freely acknowledge to being an enthusiastic traditionalist. Much of our daily lives has been dumbed down and smoothed over in the pursuit of inclusiveness. The colour is leeched from our public lives. No pomp and ceremony. We don't even have knighthoods anymore. Such a simple and easy way of rewarding members of the community - but no! Can't have that. Vestiges of colonialism.

What shallow rot.

Nevertheless I agree with the Chief de Mission of our Olympic team that we need to have a flag which represents New Zealand. Our existing flag is hard to pick out and could be for one of the Caribbean Islands or Australia so far as most of the world is concerned.

Whadda ya reckon? A gumboot and tiki? :D

261503 2004-08-14 03:44:00 Knighthoods an honour? Look at these "members of the community" : Sir Michael Fay, Sir Roger Douglas, Sir Bob Jones ... Pardon me while I vomit. Graham L (2)
261504 2004-08-14 04:17:00 Sorry but I completely object. Do we really hate Australia? What's wrong with them? After all, don't we belong to the Commonwealth? What's wrong with having a Union Jack?

Fine if you all want a flag that symbolise NZ. Problem is, it is usually not appropriate. Royal New Zealand Air Foce has a badge with the kiwi on it. Great! It's a flightless bird, this just to go to show how pathetic we are in terms of defence. Be proud of our rugby, netball, cricket, and whatever else team we have. But trust me, for the majority of normal New Zealander, who cares? I shall share with you extracts of what I read in the 'Letter to Editors' section of the NZ Herald.

"...A black flag would be appropriate. It would represent well the moody and cold character of much of New Zealand. It would also portray the underlying vilence and anger that has become such a major part of our society... would show the world that the death of freedom of thought... only thing left to be proud of is a fairly average rugby team. While we're at it... and make the captain of All Blacks head of state?" J.E. Remuera

"... suggestion of a kiwi adorning our national flag is mind-boggling. Such an inconspicuous nocturnal bird would do nothing for our self-image. ... give us a break from the funeral glommy black..... Let our All Blacks wear black with pride but not on our flag. Please" T.W. Warkworth

How many nations in the world professionally plays rugby. I can think of four -NZ, Australia, South Africa, and England. To me, only pigs would play in the mud. Ok, I admit I reguarly watch rugby -but I never play. How many top businessman or scientist play rugby? New Zealand has a lot to be proud of beside rugby, yet nobody works at it. I'm sure we could come up with a Wonder of the World if we work hard enough.

261505 2004-08-14 04:21:00 Would a new flag solve our internal debt?
Would a new flag solve our external debt?
Would a new flag solve our crime problem?
Would a new flag solve our hospital problem?
Would a new flag solve our traffic problem?
Would a new flag solve our school problems?
Would a new flag solve our "green house" problems?
Would a new flag solve our electricity problem?
Would a new flag stop real estate going up?
Would a new flag stop floods?
Would a new flag get rid of all the crap on TV1?

Then I don't think the flag needs to be changed, there are more important thing we need to focus on.

261506 2004-08-14 05:42:00 A bit of clear concise thought is probably in order .

Although we could just the muddy the waters with hating Australia, Mad scientists and the fact sy has never played our national game .

Personally I think a new flag would be good, After all its an International symbol and it would be better if it represented us as a country rather then a British colony off the coast of Australia .

Perhaps only those possessing national pride in NZ as a country would agree?

Having said that, any change to the flag would get hijacked by politics and pandering to the loud mouths, it would cost billions, take years, And end up an ugly farce that nobody would be happy with .

I suggest they leave it as is .

261509 2004-08-14 06:44:00 I agree with you Winnie, we need a bit more colour in our lives and an identity that is more in keeping with the character of the country. Anything black and silver will do nicely ;)

261510 2004-08-14 07:09:00 I suggest that we take a good long look at other countries who have changed their flags in the past. I don't know of any off the top of my head, but a thorough study into why they changed would be rather nice to see.

Personally, I don't want the flag to change. It represents our location and our heritage, besides which, a black flag of any kind would do one of two things:
(a) make us all the more boring;
or (b) make tourists think that we manufacture Black Flag insect spray.

Neither of those two options seem particularly appealing to me.

There is nothing wrong with our flag, and changing it won't do anything. Look at Telecom, they wasted over $100,000 on a new logo that didn't really achieve anything. Then again, it was peanuts to them, considering they pull in profits of over $700 million...

Canada changed their national flag in 1965 to the red and white maple leaf pattern. See here (www.canadianheritage.gc.ca).

The current flag does represent our heritage, but we are no longer a colonial outpost of England ... perhaps it is time to think more of our future and independance?
