True - and that is exactly why no proponent of a new flag expects it to be instantly accepted. It is, as mentioned by a previous poster, something that will take a generation or more to draw the same patriotic emotions, but a well-chosen flag will draw stronger patriotism over a longer period (in my opinion) than the current design.

I want to be represented by what is inherent in New Zealand, and if that happens to include what is inherent in the rest of the pacific, then, damn it, represent me by it!

261543 2004-08-16 03:00:00 I'm all for:
(a) simplicity
(b) the Kiwi or fern (or even Southern Cross)

My initial vision was of something like the Canadian flag; three broad stripes with the middles one white and carrying the national device silhouetted in one flat colour. I think it would be a mistake to do it completely naturalistically, but on the other hand, let's not go for too much stylising; the black flag with fern that's been most recently advanced makes it look like a steak with a knife stuck in it. We need a fern (or Kiwi) that's recognisable as such and looks like something you'd see on a national flag, not a commercial logo.

See Lebanon's cedar as an example www.theodora.com/flags/lebanon_flag.html (or Canada's maple leaf).

As for the colouring of the stripes: dare I say red white and blue? Too British (or worse, too French?). Maybe horizontal to avoid that impression (homage to Tasman: I once heard a Dutchman in a speech say horizontal was the only way to do flag-stripes, since flags wear on the end, and you risk losing one of your vertical colours; "horizontal stays the same colours to the end, like a stick of seaside rock".)

Or maybe ditch white altogether and do green-yellow-blue (grass, sand, sky) (Too Telecom?) with a Kiwi in some dark colour (brown? black? purple?) on the yellow stripe.

Or green-blue-yellow with the old white-rimmed-red Southern cross stars on the blue.

OK, I've run it up the flagpole - see who salutes.

Better not tell Warner Brothers; they'll drag them into court.

Or maybe if prior ownership could be proved, Uganda could sue WB. I'd be interested to watch.

261545 2004-08-16 03:32:00 I think we should use the flag everyone waves when suporting NZ, the silver fern on a black flag. The only thing that could be done is name the fronds after old Maori cheifs, native animals etc.(none of that would change the design tho, it would just give school kids somthing to learn about).

So my vote is for the currently odopted NZ flag the silver fern on a black background.

It would cost very little to make the change legal as just about every thing has the fern on it anyway and the flags have been in production for years. The only thing that needs debate is what to name the fronds after.
