You know very well that "the flag" is only a piece of cloth. Its power is in the symbolism of the nation/culture/political system it represents. People don't die specifically for pieces of cloth. They defend the flag because it represents what they believe in. Nothing wrong with that. But a new flag represents the same nation, just in a newer form. And nations do change. We now have the largest Pacific Island population in the world - quite different to 50 or 100 years ago. |

If you had said to the flag carrier, excuse me I am about to change the pic on that flag,he would have been quite miffed and rightly so.;) I have yet to meet anyone who wants to be represented by what is inherent in the pacific islands. |

| 261534 | 2004-08-15 02:20:00 | I for one would like to have a new flag. Jen put it well. The UK bit has to go. Check these, from a Google search: If you would like to see New Zealand have a referendum on the question: "Should New Zealand change its flag? " please register your support here. http://www.nzflag.co.nz/ >> The above URL is correct, but the Google search gives it as " .com " . ....And from homepages.paradise.net.nz There has been a huge push to change the flag, as New Zealand are no longer as associated with Britain as they once were. Several designs have been put forward, the main one being a white or silver fern on a black background. The silver fern has been a symbol of New Zealand for many years, and features on most national sports uniforms, including the All Blacks rugby team. This would reflect the changing of the Canadian flag in 1965 to the current design. The New Zealand Maori are pushing to have their flag replace the original as the national flag. The three colours; red, black and white, are the traditional colours of the Maori kowhaiwhai or spiral designs. A frontrunner in the quest for a new New Zealand flag is FLAG NEW ZEALAND. Blue and green represent the sea and land, and the koru shows new life. The Southern Cross still features. |

| 261535 | 2004-08-15 02:28:00 | They think the same :^O about changing the flag over in Oz.... www.ausflag.com.au Australia and New Zealand are the only two major independent Commonwealth countries which retain British Ensigns as their national flags. On 1 October 1995, the Pacific nation of Tuvalu removed the Union Jack from its national flag, partly in protest at the way Britain ignored Tuvalu's plight in being at risk of disappearing under rising sea levels. Ausflag believes Australia should adopt a new national flag because: * It is not uniquely Australian. The Australian flag is virtually indistinguishable from the New Zealand flag. At a short distance the two flags are almost identical. At international events, the New Zealand flag has been raised mistakenly for the Australian flag. When Australia's then Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, visited Ottawa in Canada in 1985 the New Zealand flag was mistakenly raised in his honour. |

| 261539 | 2004-08-15 09:56:00 | I think we need to focus on our attitudes first - The whole "the-odds-are-not-in-your-favour-you-have-no-chance-give-up-now" thing is really really sad. Our society has many demerits (such as myself), and when we do away with them, we will succeed much much more. |

| 261540 | 2004-08-16 00:58:00 | What about Hawaii? they have the Union Flag in the Corner and are a part of the United States?? "Hawaii was once an independent kingdom. (1810 - 1893) The flag was designed at the request of King Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red and blue that represent the eight main islands. The flag of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii's friendship with the British." Quoted from www.50states.com As an aside, it is only able to be called the 'Union Jack' when on a Royal Navy Vessel, Otherwise, its correct term is the 'Union Flag' :D |

| 261541 | 2004-08-16 01:27:00 | The problem with too many people in this country is that they live in the past. It doesn't matter where we came from, though it is certainly important to retain our many individual traditions. What is important is where we are going to. If we all cling to our individual pasts, then that's where we will always stay. The only black flag there ever has been was used by pirates - not a good image! We need a flag that is independent of the past of one group of immigrants. Get rid of the Union Jack in the corner and just leave the southern cross on a blue background. What's wrong with that - it is a symbol of where we are. This is not disrespectful to anyone who has fought for our nation - its what they fought for! Most of us are a brew of all nations anyway. I for one have ancestors of British, European, Jewish and Maori origins, so how can I say I am Maori, or European or anything else other than a New Zealander? The sooner we become one nation, instead of a bunch of bickering individuals and groups riddled with the baggage of bygone injustices then the better off we'll all be! |
