261512 2004-08-14 08:29:00 Now Graham, I can't let that pass:

Sir Edmund Hillary

Dame Whina Cooper

Sir Brian Barrett-Boyes

Dame Kiri Tikanawa

Sir Dove-Meyer Robinson

etc.

I don't pretend to understand why some honours are awarded. But at least you used to know about it. A recipient, such as Sir Ed, is accorded respect around the world.

Today we have David Lange, who has been awarded a very high commendation, basically ignored because he cannot add the honourific "Sir". By contrast Sir Roger Douglas (who was just lucky to be knighted before the system changed) is given the red carpet treatment. The Yanks love and envy titles.

Love or hate Lange, he deserves much better.

Or perhaps we shouldn't honour anyone. After all, we are all equal. Heaven forbid that anyone in NZ is seen as being slightly better or more deserving than the rest.

What a bland grey world we are drifting into.

261513 2004-08-14 08:59:00 I like our flag.

Why would change it?

Don't people have enough troble recognising us as it is?

Are you gonna put a stick on it?

That would be lame - an animal on the flag. How many other countries do that? Can't we just use the same bunch of lines and bars as others?

Unless I'm overlooking some blatantly obvious flag, then having a kiwi on our flag would be quite original.

Yes, I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but after reading that stuff on the history of the Canadian flag, I'm not so against changing our flag.

Of course, I would probably lob rocks at people if someone dared to seriously suggest that a new flag should use the colour black.

Maybe two blue stripes on the outside, a white stripe in the middle, and a red kiwi in the middle? Anything like that would be good enough for me, even though it resembles the Canadian flag quite a lot. ;)

261515 2004-08-14 10:00:00 Good example Jen . If we consider the flags of nations, which ones do we think of or identify? I suggest that those with clear simple symbols are the winners .

Canada, Japan, USSR, Britain, USA .

Flags which are simply bands of colour are hard to remember . Russia now uses the Imperial Flag - boring! Check it out compared with the good old hammer and sickle of the USSR .

For us, the two popular contenders are a "Kiwi" or a "Silver Fern" .

The Kiwi is a bit obscure - how many Asian, South American, African, Indian etc people would understand that?

But so what? It doesn't matter if it looks like a weird bird or a Rorschach ink blot - it would be unique .

Some say the fern looks like a white feather (the symbol for cowardice) .

One or the other would do me . Simplicity is best and most easily adopted .

Whatever is adopted, it will take a generation (about 25 years) to be accepted .

In the meantime, someone can dream up a more stirring national anthem . This dreary dirge composed by Thomas Bracken that we sing just has to go . :D

261516 2004-08-14 10:50:00 Graham I hope I'm not down wind of you and visa versa.
Without changing the flag too much just by putting a small silver fern on it would differentiate our flag from others like the Aussie one.

261517 2004-08-14 11:03:00 I have to go along with Winnie. Simplicity of design for anything is IMO, more recognisable, classier and ageless. Some of the cats breakfasts out there are forgettable, literally, and ours isn't too far off that.

261518 2004-08-14 11:18:00 I think the time has come for a new flag. To the rest of the world the NZ flag and the Australian flag are identicle.

I dont go much either on the colours of the flag of Maori independence, Tino Rangatiratanga , far too similar to facist Nazi Germany, especially the original 3 stripes of red, white and black. The Confederation of Chiefs flag is quite attractive though, as already said.

Perhaps a (or another?) competition for a new flag should be promoted.

What a novel idea. All the PC folk can argue about their preferences, and there will be so much aggro that we will all finally agree to stay where we are...

Not so. Dominica, PNG & Zambia have birds, Sri Lanka has a lion, Bhutan has a dragon (although I doubt it qualifies as an animal) but the prize for originality has to go to Uganda (w3f.com) for having Roadrunner on their flag.

Well I do.

Our current flag can be mistaken for the Aussie flag of course. Only if you are blind or know not how many stars and what they represent.

> Whadda ya reckon? A gumboot and tiki? :D

I will stay with our current flag if I have a choice.

I have no idea how long I will have a choice for.

I did not want the Skyhawks, Privy Council and Honours lists like Knights and Dames other things to go down the loo but there you are.

My impression is that it won't be long before this thread goes the same way as the other things in the above sentence.
